(Continued from page 1)
Mr. H&Utead was a man noted
for his sarcasm and especially for
the peculiar expressions of his
face while he was listening to or
putting a question. He had a skill
ful roundabout way of trying to
make his queries as agreeable ns
possible. He presented me to
Mr. McKinley with altogether to
much gusto for the quality of
art that I was capable of putting
forth. But if I ever listened to
a more delightful conversation,
ranging over a half or possibly
three-quarters of an'hour, where
really so little of importance was
said, I don't recall it. Of course,
Mr. Halstead was framing ques
tions that no presidential candi
date at so early a date could
think of answsring. Yet the
masterly way by which his most
distinguished friend replied was
a lesson never to be forgotten.
I studied the alleged resem
blance of Major McKinley 's face
to the Dictures of Napoleon. It
was all there with a slight differ
ence in the eyes. But most at
tractive of all was that speaking
voice, that remarkable gentle
ness, that quality of charm in his
mannerisms. He inquired smil
ingly as to whether he was sit
ting in the right light to afford a
picture that would be becoming
a man from whom so much was
expected.
But I well remember the hard
est part of all our visit was when
we came to say goodbye. As
Mr. McKinley grasped your hand
at the moment when he said "call
again" at least two fingers of
his hand seemed to slip gently up
your sleeve giving the effect of
pulse warmers. You know the
soothing kind of a feeling I
mean. So that it appeared to
the philosopher why go away to
call again, why not remain with
Major McKinley. You were
never conscious of sitting down
in his presence, when you were
sitting down. You never re
member what kind of a chair
yours was but you could never
forget what a delightful old-fashioned
rocking chair he sat in.
I remember that he smoked
cigars all the time and you were
sorry that you did not smoke be
cause it looked as though he got
so much more out of a cigar than
just the ordinary man who bites
the end off from a cigar, lights
it and begins puffing away. Mc
Kinley appeared to visit with Ins
cigar, seemed to make a personal
study of its wrapper, acted as
though he knew its first name
and that when he drew forth the
fragrance it was with mutual
consent
My regard for Major McKinley
and my personal opinien of him
was in striking contrast to the
cartoons that I drew of him.
During the heat of the cam
paign that followed I met him
several times and our relations
were always pleasant but he
never referred to my cartoons in
any way, shape or manner.
