MCH I HAVB SKETCHED.
(Continued from page 1)
That evening and the day fol
lowing I mado pictures of the
great Speaker, and, much to my
embarassment, Mr. Ralph insist
ed upon showing them to him.
Some weeks later Mr. Reed sent
word by Ralph that, if I could
spare them, he would like to have
the original drawings, many of
which I sent him. His letter of
acknowledgment shows the kind
ly sarcasm of this distinguished
Btatcsman: "Your pictures of
mo aro not wildly flattering but
awfully." Ho seemed very
friendly. I always attributed to
his sense of humor the cutting
things he sometimes said.
Walking with him one day
from the House over to the Sen
ate, in the big rotunda under the
dome of the Capitol where many
people piloted by official guides
are usually to be found listening
to the strange echoes of the place,
a tall, thin woman approached us
very rapidly and paused a few
feet away from us. Then step
ping directlv in front of Mr.
Reed, she inquired, "Is this Mr.
Thomas B. Reed of Maine?"
Bowing politely in his peculiar
manner, he replied in his nasal
drawl: "Yes, madam, it is."
She centinued: " Mr. Reed, 1
recognized you instantly from the
comic pictures of you." He
turned his rolling head towards
me, giving a most pathetic and
painful sigh. Then letting his
head roll in the direction of the
woman, he said: "Indeed, mad
am, I should think that was ab
solutely impossible." iahe re
plied that on the contrary it was
quite easy. We paused for a
moment, while my cheeks burned
with embarrassment Mr. Reed
seemed to be reveling in fun.
The woman tugged at her black
lisle gloves. Then, as if feeling
that she had asked a question
that was embarassing and hoping
to put herself in better grace with
Mr. Reed, she stammering!'
asked him how mnch he weighed.
Reed's face grew calm, and then
with much concealed mirth, he
answered: "Madam, no gentle
man ever weighs over two hun
dred pounds. " As a quick guess
from a two-year old child would
have put his weight at almost
three hundred, the woman caught
the force of his little joke. In
the laughter that followed we
found ourselves on our way,
leaving the questioner much fllus
tered with pride that she had
carried on a conversation with so
great a man as Thomas B. Reed.
Mr. Reed's wit and humor and
sarcasm were, of course, known
from one continent to another.
How so funny a man could make
a serious speech has always been
a mystery to me, yet to suppose
that he had no serious moments
would be ridiculous. He was one
of those peculiar characters who
seemed to accomplish all of his
serious work in a jocular way,
His big head, no doubt, if stud
ied by the phrenologist, revealed
the characteristics of the "Czar."
I neyer remember looking at Mr.
Reed without an inclination to
laugh. Not, however, with any
feeling of disrespect toward the
great man. He simply appealed
to my sense of the humorous so
strongly that I couldn't be seri
ous in his presence.
Homer Davenport.
You will find that druggists
everywhere speak well of Cham
berlain's Cough Remdy. They
know from long experience in
the sale of it that in cases of
coughs and colds it can always
bo depended upon, and that it is
pleasant and safe to take. For
sale by nil dealers.
