Mrs. Mary A. Caldwell died at
the home of her son, Lee Cald
well in this city Wednesday even
ing at 5 o'clock after a lingering
illness. She had been suffering
from diabetes for a long time and
her condition had been serious.
Her death was not unexpected
hut it has cast a doom over a
wide circle of pioneer friends
with whom she had been closely
associated for many years.
Deceased was born in Welling
ton, Virginia in 1S30 and was
married to C. M. Caldwell (now
deceased) in Missouri in 1848.
They moved to California in 1852
and to Western Oregon six years
later. The family came to Harney
Valley in 1879 where she had
since resided. She was a most
estimable lady honored by a wide
circle of friends. She had a
prominent part in the early his
tory of this county and was of
the pioneer stock that counts.
Her generous hospitality placed
all her acquaintances under deep
obligations that have never been
forgotten.
"Grandma" Caldwell, as she
was familiarly Known, win De
missed and while her suffering is
at an end it is nevertheless hard
to realize that the cheerful and
companionable woman is taken
from us.
She was the mother of five
children, four of whom survive
her: Henry Caldwell, of Lake
county; John Caldwell, of Waits-
burg, Washington.; Lee and Mrs.
M. II. Brenton of this city. One
daughter, Mrs. Almeda Stenger-
White, died last year. The hus
band died several years ago.
The funeral services were
conducted by Rev. C. C. Bab
bidge of the Presbyterian church
at the family residence Friday
at 10 o'clock.
