N Mrs. Mary A. Caldwell died at the home of her son, Lee Cald well in this city Wednesday even ing at 5 o'clock after a lingering illness. She had been suffering from diabetes for a long time and her condition had been serious. Her death was not unexpected hut it has cast a doom over a wide circle of pioneer friends with whom she had been closely associated for many years. Deceased was born in Welling ton, Virginia in 1S30 and was married to C. M. Caldwell (now deceased) in Missouri in 1848. They moved to California in 1852 and to Western Oregon six years later. The family came to Harney Valley in 1879 where she had since resided. She was a most estimable lady honored by a wide circle of friends. She had a prominent part in the early his tory of this county and was of the pioneer stock that counts. Her generous hospitality placed all her acquaintances under deep obligations that have never been forgotten. "Grandma" Caldwell, as she was familiarly Known, win De missed and while her suffering is at an end it is nevertheless hard to realize that the cheerful and companionable woman is taken from us. She was the mother of five children, four of whom survive her: Henry Caldwell, of Lake county; John Caldwell, of Waits- burg, Washington.; Lee and Mrs. M. II. Brenton of this city. One daughter, Mrs. Almeda Stenger- White, died last year. The hus band died several years ago. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. C. Bab bidge of the Presbyterian church at the family residence Friday at 10 o'clock.
