is informed by tho local school
board that there has been no con
tract lot for our school buildinjf :

ald, of this city, wore the suc
cessful bidders for tho construc
tion of tho new hchool building to
bo elected at Hums. Their bid
was $27,800. The building is to
bo completed by September 1,
1912, and Messrs. Hayles and Mc
Donald nnd a number of local
carpenters will leave for Hums
in a few days to take up their
work. There were twelve bid
ders. The Hums school will be
two stories and a full basement.
Tho basement will contain the
manual training nnd domestic
science departments, girls and
boys' lunch rooms, toilets for
girls and boys nnd the gymnasi
um which will bo 40x70 feet and
20 feet high.
The first floor will have four
grade rooms, and the upper part
of tho gymnasium.
Tho second floor will have four
grade rooms, principal's oflice,
teachers' room, library and the
assembly hall which will bo10x70
feet in size.
Arthur Elliott of Ontario js tho
architect in charge, and tho stylo
of architecture is straight modern
composite. The building will bo
of brick and stone construction.
It will bo heated by furnace. It
will bo mechanically ventilated
on tho basis of 30 cubic feet of
fresh air per ininuto per pupil.
There aro 400 children of school

seven teachers. Hums is a towit
of 1200 people, is the county seat
of Harney county, and is the
center of a larire airricultural and
hiock raising section ui uiumui
