SM t-J "-M III .' M r f 'i. I I I SOMB DBVASTATINQ INSECTS. "The worst dovnstinir insects in tho world is said to bo Knln injr n foot hold in Oregon. Tho diunnjro tlmt thoy nccomplish runs into ninny millions of dol lars. Theso nro tho Rinsy and brown tnil moths. Theso, with white buttcrllic3-tuid plno beetles would soon destroy tho largest forests in the state. Tho de struction by fire in our forests would bo less in dollars and cents than tho distraction that can be wrought in a short timo by mi attack of tho gipsy moths." This statement by William h. Finloy, President of tho Oregon Audubon Society, is bnscd upon two nowspapor reports, one from Tacoma and ono from Portland. Tho former states that tho brown tailed moth has infested the Rainier Valley, near Seattle, and that tho state commissioner of horticulture has ordered the af fected under mmrantine. The latter is in tho form of a com munication stating that what ap pears to bo the gipsy moth has made its appearance in South east Portland. When it is realized that entire forests ore .stripped of their foli age and loft as barren as tele graph poles within a few days, that vast areas of timber country are actually destroyed by tho at tacks of the gipsy and brown tail moths, it is time that n thorough investigation was mado to assertain whether there be any truth in these rumors. The gipsyt moth was imported into this country for scientific purposes in 18G8. While they were carefully kept in captivity for some timo, they finally broke away and within twenty years, New England was attacked by them in such numbers that entire forests were striped in a short time. The legislature of Massa chusetts appropriated $50,000 for their extermination, but to little avail. Within ten years, over $1, 000, 000 was spent in the work, followed by an appropria tion of $300,000 in one year, yet the gipsy moth was unconqucred. The state finally gave up the work, and one property owner spent over $75,000 on his own estate in an effort to stem the fearful slaughter of the trees. It will not take long for the Oregon farmer, fruit grower or timber owner to appreciate tho enormity of this fearful destruc tion, after investigating the fail ure of tho state of Massachusetts. What would happen to these magnificent Oregon forests, should the gipsy moth once gain a foothold? No one can tell, for the financial loss would be greater than could ever result from fire. It is the experience of the Biological Survey of tho Depart ment of Agriculture that once these frightful enemies of the tree invade a timber country, they cannot be distroyed. It is urged that the best that can bo done is to check them. If 75 percent of the total is destroyed, a good work has been done. The scientific checking of this pest is outlined in several bulle tins that have been issued by the Bureau of Biological Survey and great emphasis is laid upon the natural check provided by bird life. The chickdee, nuthatch, bush tit, warbler, sparrow and wood- pecKer, oi me uregon uirus, are known to be the worst enemies to the gipsy moth that wo have. Many sections of the country have been watched by scientists with the idea of ascertaining to what extend these birds actually feed upon moth. Tho result has been astonishing. These inves tigations have demonstrated that these birds have an economical value in the destruction of in sect pests in our forests that no ono can approximate. Upon opening the Btomachs of the birds, it has been found that the principal diet was, insects and moths that ore detrimental to forest growth. It is a popular belief that birds of certain kinds are destructive to fruit trees, while an analysis of bird stom achs show conclusively that in sect life is their chief food. As a matter of fact, tho harm that they do, which is slight, is great ly exceeded by the good. It is estimated by tho Depart ment of Agriculture that tho damage sustained by insect in festation, to tho American tree is 62,500,000 annually. Does anyone dare estimate hoiv much this damage would bo increased, were the forest enemies to make Oregon their battle ground? The time to check tneir inroads is now, when it is expected they are making this way. The bird hfo of tho state should bo loyally protected. These littlo police men of tho air should be encour aged, sageguarded and petted, I for upon thorn, to a very largo salvation of the forests of this great state. OLD COIN POUND. An English penny, coined in 1837, two years after Queen Vic toria ascended tho throne of England, was found nt Vancouver Washington tho other day by workmen who wcro tenring up an old wtfoden sldownlk, which hns been laid so long that no one seem to recall the time. The old coin, covered with tho accumulations of several decades, when cleaned with acid, showed the profile of Queen Victoria as a young girl. The English wore hero when tho Hudson's Bay Company was in control, and it is probablo that the penny was brought across tho ocean and around the Horn in the pocket of a British officer and lost, in what was then tho Western wilderness.. Tho Eng lish surrendered this post in 18-10. Happiest flrl la Lincoln. A Lincoln, Neb., girl writes, "I had been ailing for some time with chronic constipation and stomach trouble.
