SUN3BT NOTES.
John Hodder was n visitor to
Burns Saturday.
Tho Nowcll boys started to
stackinR hay for Win. Ilanloy on
tho 00 ranch.
Clyde and Vnn Embrco rut up
a nice stack of hay on their
farm this week. Tho hay ia a
mixture of rye grass and needle
Krass and is of first class quality.
R. D. Staid started to tho hay
field Monday to work for James
Bunyard.
Robt. Sottlemyro is cutting
most of his ryo for hay and it is
the best seen this year.
Mr. Tomlin has commenced
plowing his eighty aero field to
seed to grain tins fall.
Sunset will bo a grand place
for tho location of a branch ex
periment station and it ought to
havo one.
Surveying out of the town site
at Wellington has come to a sud
den stop for reason unknown to
the writer.
Burt Porter and W. It. Daw
son are working near Iawen.
Colin Dawson returned homo for
a few days from near Diamond
valley where he has been work
ing. Mrs. Embree, Harold Sellers,
Clyde Embree, Van Embree. W.
It. Dawson and wife and Laura
Dawson, Burt Porter and wife
were the Sunsetters who celebr
ated at Lawen and they all re
port having a good time and that
it was the best celebration ever
held in Harney county. We all
hope that the Valley View
Grange will hold another cele
bration next year.
Mrs. Blackmer returned home
Friday from Burns.
Mrs. R. D. Stahl has the best
patch of cabbage in this part of
Harney Valley and it is doubt
ful whether it can bo beat any
where else.
THE HORSE.
The horse is one of the most
useful and valuable of a domes
tic animals, and with proper and
kindly treatment responds will
ingly and freely to every de
mand for his use to the unmost
limit of hts capacity, lie is
kind, faithful, obedient ond ws
sesses traits and powers which
commend him to the kindliest
consideration of his master. Yet
with all these traits it is sail to
note that man, his master, often
gives him the very scantiest con
sideration. And strange as it
may seem it is the class of men
who from their occupation are
compelled to place the most de
pendence on the horse who gives
him the least care, and mistreats
him the most. How often does
one see a farmer come to town
of a morning his favorate saddle
horse, hitch him to a post and
leave him stand there all day,
without feed or water, no matter
whether it is on a cold wintry
day, or the boiling heat of a
summer's sun,, while he goes
about town having the best of
fare; warming his body, or cool
ing himself in the shade in sum
mer; having a fine dinner, the
companionship of friends and a
general good time, utterly forget
ful or neglectful of the wants or
comfort of tho poor horse he has
left tied to the post. It is a
faithful saying that "the merci
ful man is merciful to his beast,"
but what a comment is this upon
such treat of the poor hoi so
shivering and hungry in the
winter's blast, or sweltering and
thirsting in the summer.s heat.
Is not that cruelty personified?
Is such a horseowner worth the
friendship or companionship
of his fellow man? Yet his
name seems to be legion. He
may be found in every commun
ity. Ex.
'The best list of early closing
over made for tho races schedul
ed for the State Fair next Sep
tember has been secured and the
meet will be full of interest as
all that like to see spirited con
tests of this kind. While many
favorite racers aro listed, there
are more new entries this year
than ever before.
Umatilla County will havo a
great wheat crop of about 0,000,
000. This county growa about
1 per cent of tho cereal produced
in tho United States.
Sprains require careful treat
ment. Keep quiot and apply
Chamberlain's Liniment freely.
It will remove tho soreness and
quickly restore tho parts to a
healthy condition. For salo by
all good Dealers.
