-.., iff r vE1 i if ; INDUSTRIAL NOTES. (Portland Correspondence.) Tom Richardson has returned from Baltimore, whoro ho carried on n short publicity cam paign and organized the commer cial interests so they will boost their city. Mr. Richardson re ports n great movement liaa been started thcro to induce Americans to see their own nnnnlrv hnfnro troillff to EUI'OPO. A big convention will bo held there January 22-27 next to fur ther this idea. "Oregon should bo dcoply in terested in this convention." said Mr. Richardson. "If Ore gon could secure one per ccntof the people of the congested cities of the east who should move, it would more than double the population of the state. The old East 1ms no patriotism. The people talk about, travel in and know only Europe and other far countries, and European travel drains this country of $400,000. 000 every year. Every commu nity in the West should strive to make this convention one of the greatest ever held. We must arrest foreign sentiment and at least make our national capital an American city." War has been declared upon the pine beetle, that is causing ravages in the forest of Eastern Oregon. Stale Forester Elliot and his deputies will work in enniucction with the federal officers in the attempt to best the beetle. Bend has started a contest be tween its citizens that will add to the attractiveness of that place. To the householder grow ing the best lawn will be paid a prize of $50. Another award of $25 will be paid to the one keep ing the neatest and best looking backyard from this time until the distribution of the awards, which will be held in connection with the Railroad Day celebra tion that will mark the advent of the new lines sometime in July. California business men will invade Southern Oregon on a tradegetting trip, leaving San Francisco May 1G. They will visit the Klamath country and other Southern Oregon sections, besides getting better acquainted with merchants of Northern Cal ifornia. A feature of annual conven tion of tho Pacific Northwest Music Teacher's Association, at Portland June 7-10, will be an organ recital at the White Tem ple on the afternoon of Thursday June 8, by Dr. Frank Wilber Chace, organist of the First Pres byterian church of Seattle. Dr. Chace is recognized as among the foremost organists of the present day. This will be only one attraction for music lovers among many that have been arrang ed for the convention. A manu script concert, by Northwest composers, is another feature arranged for the following after noon that is attracting much at tention. A prize contest for poster de signs for use by the Oregon de legation at the National Educa. tional Association convention at San Francisco is announced by the Portland Commercial Club for school children of the state. The posters will be 19 x 25 in ches, in two colors, and one set of prizes of $5, $3 and $2 will be offered for the thrco best designs submitted by pupils of Portland Bchools and similar prizes will go to pupils outside this city. Tho posters should be on heavy cover paper and any legend may bo used to boost Oregon. Con test will closo June 15. Pacific Stock and Poultry food at the Lunaburg, Dalton & Co. Department Store.
