field here to ascertain conditions
and the proper time required to
properly survey and adjust the
water ritrhts along Silvics River.
He left this morning for Salem
where he will report his findings.

his Wagontire Mountain home

who have been occupying their
residence in this city during the
school year. Mr. Comegys in

good luck with their stock during
the winter just closed, not losing
any and turned them on the
range in good shape.
W. G. Howell arrived from
Portland last night coming in by
way of Bend. J. C. Bracher and
Grant Thomas, two of Mr. How
ell's friends accompanied him in.
The party left Bend yesterday
morning and followed tho new
road a portion of the distance.
Mr. Howell states that with a
little more work in places this
will bo a fino auto and freight
road and tho most direct route to
Portland. Tho now road makes
tho distance to Bend less than
140 miles.
Post Master Loggan has receiv
ed instructions from tho Post
Ofllco Department to count every
picco of mail received or sent out
through this ofllco during tho
month of May. This includes
every class of mail and means' a

Misses Elonor Heyer and Bess
Stevens, two young Indies from
Wisconsin, arrived here this
week having come in from The
Dalles in company with Sheriir
Richardson and C. F. McKinney
who were returning from Port
land with their new autos. Both
are looking for homesteads and
are favorably impressed with
I Iarney Valley. There were four
young ladies in the party when
they left Wisconsin, two of whom
aro in other parts of the state
looking for surtable locations.
