Wheat growers of 28 counties
of tho Pacific Northwest, 1& In
Oregon, 6 in Idaho and 9 in
Washington, members" of tho
Farmers Union, havo Bccurcd a
lease on Columbia Dock No. 1,
for tho Beason and proposo to
handlo tholr crop from tho field
to tho ships taking it to foreign
markets.
Tho purposo of tho movo is not
solely to handlo tho grain of tho
members but to make a profit
out of tho traffic. Purchases of
grain will bo mado in tho wheal
belt just as individual firms buy
it and plans nro being mado
for tho incorporation of a trans
portation company. Sales of
wheat will bo mado on tho dock,
terms being fob Portland.
Rice in Oregon may soon be
como an accomplished fact for
experiments havo been under
taken on a tract of irrigated land
at Stavton. where a dozon vari
eties of rice will bo planted as
soon as tho land can be gotten
into condition. Tho work is in
chargo of Charles Chambliss, a
government expert in rice cul
ture. About ten acres will bo
used experimentally, use of tho
tract having been given by tho
owners of tho property. Iho
land will be seeded at onco and
irrigated throughout its growing
season.
Receipts of livestock at tho
Portland yards for the first three
months of the year show great
going over tho corresponding
period of last year. Totals were
cattle. 799G: sheep, 25,018: hogs,
6982. The increase over tho first
quarter of 1910 is; cattle, 2-17;
sheep, 20,029; hogs, 2053.
Tho Breeders' Spring sale of
blooded horses will bo held in
Portland April 18-22. There
promises to be a large showing
of fine horses and some pure bred
cattle will also be offered. Ore
gon, Montana, California, Iowa
and Kentucky are among the
states to be represented at the
coming sale.
Letters of thanks have been
received from China by Ben
Selling, who collected the famous
fund, and gratitude is expressed
for tho recent contribution of
$5,000 made by Portland people
and received in Hong Kong for
distribution. Sinco that sum
was received a similar sum has
been collected and sent and con
tributions are still coming in.
Klamath County has set what
appears to bo a new egg record
Harry Caden has 15 ordinary
hens that laid 25C eggs last
month. Six of the hens are
pullets and did not begin to lay
until after the first week of the
month.
Visits to all the irrigation pro
jects in the state will bo made
during the year by the State
Board. State Engineer Lewis is
now planning the inspection
Several new projects have been
taken up that have never been
visited by the state officials as
yet
Portland had a birthday this
week, beintr 60 years old. Its
municipal government was or
ganized April 7, 1851, for on that
date the first election was held
Then there was one precinct;
now there are 155.
Clay Clemens mill ia the near
est one to Burns where all kinds
of lumber both rough and dress
ed can be had. Near Canyon

NEW CLUBBINQ PROPOSITION

started at Lincoln, Nebraska, by
Prof. H. W. Campbell and devot
ed to the subject of how to farm
in tho dry country and how to
get best results from soil tillage
under normal conditions. This
Paper is Campbell's Scientific
Fanner and wo offer it clubbed
with The Times-Terald both for
$2.50 per year cash. Prof. Camp
bells' now paper is a monthly,
chock full of good things, the
only paper of its kind in tho
world, and it embodies the" re
sults of the editor's many years
of painstaking investigation of
tho soil tillage proposition.
