A Timber Problem.
Tho followinj? nppenred in n
recent issue of tho Portlnnd
Journal dated nt Fife: To tho
Editor of tho Journal You real
ize that tho national forest em
braces Tnbout 161,000,000 acres.
This is maturo timber. Tho best
of tho timber used to bo sold for
$2.50 per aero and that would bo
nbout 2i to 5 cents per 1000 foot
and tho land without the timber
was usually worth moro than
$2.50 per acre. When tho timber
trust Rot hold of tho best timber
it got tho government to put tho
price up to $2.50 and as high as
$4 Btumpano per 1000 feet. You
realize this mature timber ought
to be sold for homo consumtion
for not over 10 to 25 cents per
1000 feet, not bo exported or
wasted. I have no doubt that
Portland could get its wood from
tho Mt Hood district if the gov
ernment would sell it for 5 cents
per cord for $1.00 to $1.50 less
than it does by that electric
road. Vast (iiiantities of this
timber arc burned by fires
each year and it is held high so
the trust can got a big price, and
we, the owners of tho mature
timber, have to see it burn every
year because our servant, tho
government, has become our
master.
I often think of what Goldsmith
said about a republic: "Tho rich
owned the government and no
body was responsible for any
thing." The mature timber
should be sold cheap and not
wasted or exported or monopoliz
ed, which the government could
easily avoid. Brush should bo
piled and burned after the first
rain in fall and in spring as soon
as dry enough, so as to prevent
forest fires.

BOND PEOPLE VIEWINO OUT ROAD.
Yesterday morning Road Sup
ervisor E. W, Richardson and
W. W. Orcutt left Bend on horse
back to view out tho proposed
Bend-Burns road as far as the
Lake County line. It is their in
tention to get data on a loute
which will follow an air line
through the intervening territory,
this being entirely practicable
thanks to the level and open
character of the country.
They will take about ten days
to the trip. After a practical
route has Leon selected, two
automobiles conveying a crowd
of business men of Bend will go
over the proposed road. The
road from Riley into Burns is
one of tho best in Central Oregon
and according to Supervisor
Richardson the proposed road
will be built to Riley.
Supervisor Richardson states
that he has made arrangements
with Messrs. Wilson and Dunn
who own the land near the Mc-
Gillvray hill, on the present road
