INDUSTRIAL NOTGS.
(Portland Correspondence.)
That Oreiron should lmyo an
annual dairy show of largo pro-J
portions is tho belief of Dr. V.
S. McCluro, chief of the Bureau
of Animal Industry in the North
west. That tho greatest oxposl
' tion in the country, with the pos
sible exception of tho National
Show at Chicago, could bo held
here each year is his statement,
basing this prediction on tho
manifest advantages of tho cli
mate and all conditions that
favor tho dairy industry.
"Western Oregon," said ho,
"should become the greatest
dairy country in America.
Natural advantages hero aro
equalled nowhere elso and the
stato should exert an effort to in
crease its dairy output JLOO per
cent An annual dairy product
of $100,000,000 is below tho capa
city of Oregon along these lines.
"If Portland would promote
and develop a western dairy
show, it will in a few years be
come the largest and most inter
esting livestock exposition held
west of the Mississippi River.
The result of such a show would
be the stimulation of the dairy
interests and hundreds of people
would come to Oregon to engage
in the industry."
Loyal Oregonians have reason
to feel proud because of tho trib
ute to Oregon apples paid by
Prof. H. E. VanDcman, Judge
at the Spokane Apple show, who
declared the car of SpitzenbergsJ
winning the sweepstakes prize,
which were grown at Hood River,
were the most perfect apples he
had over seen. Prof. VanDcman
is a noted judge of fruit, having
awarded the prizes at tho Colum
bian Exposition at Chicago and
he has also acted in a similar cap
acity at the leading fruit shows
of the country.
February 1, 1911 is the date
fixed for the inauguration of train
service into Interior Oregon over
the new Hill line up the Des
chutes. By then it is expCcted
the line will be in operation to
Matolius, 150 miles south of the
Columbia river. Grading has al
ready been completed through
Madras, six miles north of Mat
olius. Rails are now laid 30 miles
south of the Columbia.
The display taking first prize
at the recent Dry Farming Con
gress in Spokane was grown and
exhibited by Tillman Reuter. of
Madras, and it was so good that
tho exhibit has been secured for
permanent display of the Cham
ber of Commerce of Portland.
The collection of farm products
is surprisingly complete and
serves as a splendid illustration
of what can be done on semi
arid lands without irrigation.
Four hundred thousand invita
tions to attend the Oregon Good
Roads Convention in Portland,
December 12, have been sent to
representative citizens in every
county of the state. The con
vention plans to put into definite
shape the practical road-building
campaign to follow the passage
of the recent amendment giving
counties the right to bond them
selves for highway improvements.
NEW CLUBBING PROPOSITION
We have .arranged to offer in
connection with this paper, the
new monthly farm magazine just
started at Lincoln, Nebraska, by
Prof. H. W. Campbell and devot
ed to the subject of how to farm
in the dry country and how to
get best results from soil tillage
under normal conditions. This
Paper is Campbell's Scientific
Farmer and we offer it clubbed
with The Times-Terald both for
2.50 per year cash. Prof. Camp
bells' new paper is a monthly,
chock full of good things, the
only paper of its kind in the
world, and it embodies the re
sults of the editor's many years
of painstaking investigation of
the soil tillage proposition.
