ATTACK PORTLAND STOCKYARDS
The following Salem dispatch
appears in the Jeurnal: Live
stock men of Oregon assembled
at tho annual meeting of Oregon
Pure Bred Livestock association
at the Oregon sUto fair grounds
last night made severe attack up
on the Portland Union stock
yards and methods employed
there. Tho stock market was
declared to bo in ,thc worst con
dition since new stock yards were
built as all competition has been
eliminated. The stock men de
clared they were not getting full
value for their stock since com
petition in the stock market had
disappeared.
State Dairy and Food Commis
sioner J. W. Bailey was speaker
and introduced the subject. He
read a letter written by D. O.
Lively in which Mr. Lively
claimed credit for improving tho
market for stock. Mr. Bailey
said Mr. Lively's claim was with
out foundation, that since new
stock yards had been organized
no buyers went into the country
and only one bid was asked for
stock.
All stock is consigned to the
stock yards and if the owner does
not care to accept the price of
fered for his stock he is charged
$30 per ton for hay until such
time as he cares to take the price
offered.
George Chandler followed Bai
ley and said his experience at
Portland Union Stock Yards was
sufficient to give him the impres
sion "There was something rot
ten in Portland as well as in Den
mark." Mr. Chandler says that
prize winning car of cattle at
Portland show last year brought
seven cents per pound while his
car which was awarded close
second by judges brought only
4& cents per pound at the Port
land Union Stock Yards. He
said he believed some buyers had
organized unlawful combination
in restraint of trade or had an
understanding at least.
"Baily has his hammer out for
everything," said an official of
the Union Stock Yards company
in answer to the dairy commis
sioner's attack at Salem last
night "He simply doesn't know
what he is talking about. He
never comes down here. If he
did he would know that approxi
mately a cent more a pound is
being paid today than a year ago.
There have been one or two little
slumps of the market but they
have never been serious.
"There is no unlawful conbi
nation. There is no price fixing.
The buyers have to give a bond
to see that the shippers suffer
no loss. The Union Stock Yards
is the chief distributing point of
the northwest.
"Buyers from Seattle, Aber
deen, Salem and other points are
stationed here. Since the stock
yards began operating approxi
mately 4500 car loads of stock
worth $7,500,000 have been handl
ed here. It is too big and im
portant an industry to be made
the subject of scurrilous attacks.
"Bailey last night took figures
of 3 weeks ago when the market
had a little slump due to conges
tion. Prices have advanced 50
to 75 cents over three weeks ago
and prices were never higher.
Bailey seems to have an ax to
grind. We can think of no other
reason why he should make an
attack upon us."

Sugar Beets Test Satisfactorily
The secretary of the Fair Asso
ciation recently secured some
samples of sugar beets grown
in different districts and on diP
ferent soils in this vicinity which
were sent to the experiment
station at the state agricultural
College for analysis and tests as
to saccharine. These specimens
were not mature and it was fear
ed the tests would not be satis
factory but Chemist C. E. Brad
ley stated in his report the con
dition of the samples was very
good, except they had dried out
considerable. The result shows
as follews:
No. 1 -Total solids in juico,
20.2; per cent of sugar, 15.G;
purity of juice, 77.5.
No. 2 -Solids in juice, 19.9;
per cent sugar, 13.1; purity of
juice, 73.2.
No. 3 Solids in juice, 15.2;
per cent sugar, 10.4; purity of
juice. G8.7.
No. 1 was raised without any
irrigation near foothills, No. 2
out in the valley and No. 3 ad
joining Burns.
A GOOD POSITION
Can be had by ambitious young
men and ladies in the field of
"Wireless" or Railway telegra
phy. Since the 8-hour law be
came effective, and since the
Wireless companies are establish
ing stations throughout tho
country there is a great shortage
of telegraphers. Positions pay
beginers from $70 to $90 per
month, with good chance of ad
vancement. The National Tele
graph Institute of Portland, Ore
gon, operates six official institutes
in America, under supervision of
It. R. and Wireless Officials and
places all graduates into positions.
It will pay you to write them
for full details.
Portland's Harvest Festival,
which was the big feature of the
past week in Portland, was the
most successful such event in the
history of tho city. The crowds
were the biggest ever attending
any similar affair in the state,
with the exception of the live
stock show at the Lewis & Clark
Fair. Tho stock was of a very
high class and the races were run
for the biggest purses over offer
ed in the Northwest. The sup
port given the fair was gratifying
and plans are being outlined for
a $1,000,000 livestock show next
year.
