ft.5 d wwmewnjn mililiiJJ nfmm tf 1 i 1 ., $ f. 9. n 1 KILUNtl TIMH 'The Atlanta Constitution chain- mons ono of thohnvs of nature in the following reply to a Yankee editor who evidently is descend ed from Puritan ancesters: The New Bedford, Mass , Standard is a trifle peevish be cause someone has written, in defense of the lighter class of magazines, that they sometimes print stories worth the reading "and kill an evening very plea santly for the person who has a little superfluous time to slay." "Time" comments our contem porary, "is one of the most valu able possessions a man has. It is his to use, to enjoy, to make profit by, to occupy but he whoso idea of time is that it i something to 'kill has a pooi idea of what timo is worth." And then, putting on the loud pedal, "Killing time, indeed! A man might as well kill himself." Which is one part truth and nine parts of what one may call, for lack of a more elegant tonn "tommy rot." Ask any leputable physician, and ho will tell you that the over whelming majority of Americans contending today with nervous or physical breakdown got there by two reutes: The small part of them, through faulty habits and dis sipation. The indefinitely larger pait. through the Benjamin Franklin valuation of "time" indorsed by our contemporary, so resolutely occupy their hours and minutes in presumably profitable pursuits as to infringe on the domain of rest and recreation -whereupon, of course, the human body, being wiser than its tenent, goes on a strike. Extravagance in the use of time is, certainly, hardly less than a crime. But that perverted reasoning that would work the body and the faculties at concert pitch in cessantly, allowing no time for the sedative of light leading or the nervine of sane pleasure, de feats a God-given law and visits sure penalties on its advocates. Mighty few Americans in this strenuous era of the pursuit universay, need a spur. A good many do need a check-rein. Wanted parties to contract to put up from (500 to 1000 tons of hay. V C I1YKD, AtlinlnUtrntor i'i:rinoN iou i.iqcou i.iuk.wsi: "How does central Oregon look?" asked an inquisitive person of a man who had spent five weeks down in the railroadless area. And the individual was honest in his quest for information. Yet no one would assume to ask a man how Ohio looked to him, even if he should spend a year in that state. That's where Oregon fools the best of them, for Ohio could be dropped into central Oregon without touching a rilroad or a city of any size, and space enough would be left to place half a dozen of the New England states with their teem ing millions of people. When people speak of magnificent distances they must be think ing of central Oregon. Portland Journal.
