L ri w w l ,1 l-Tt Ml t!" i Secretary Ballingcr has been declnred all right by Congress and Mr. Pinchot is down and out for good. Now if tlio secretary will instruct the general land of fice to allow people around hero to hnrvost dead iunincrs on the public land without the formal- ity of a permit, ho will gain the everlasting gratitude of resident citizens. We have no coal dopos its to fall back upon, pine-timber is to valuable for cordwood and juniper is to worthless for any oth er purpose, being of the "scrub" variety. But the general land office has recently ordered the law inforccd prohibiting the re moval of these trees, probably under the mistaken idea that they have some commercial val ue. They have not. Some of them are 2500 years old and they are still nothing but cordwood. By far the greater number are upon scab land that never can be homestcaded, so that no set tler's heritage is wasted. This city faces a wood famine during the coming winter under the or der, and we feel sure that if Mr. Ballinger, who is a Western man, had personal knowledge of the wood situation hero ho would re scind the order immediately. He is not a rabid conservationist and would see at once that the prospect of paying $10 or $12 a cord for green wood through a nnccihtv cnvnrn u'inim- i not hv any means pleasant. Besides, untill recently this scab has not been classed as timber land, and whoever changed the classifica tion was undoubtedly somewhat excited at the time. Prineville Review.
