NOTICK FOK PlTIHiICATION. I'NiTicnFTATisiI.sruiOrriig, I lliirna, Oregon, April 'i, 15t0 I Notice la hereby kIycii tltatTlio HUM nt Ore iron lias filed In tbla olllce It application Vsortat No otli3loicloct, under tho pulsions of the Aft tf Congress, Approved August 14, tl, and acta supplemental and amendatory I hereto, tho NKJiSK'i See, SB and NW48W4 Section 34, T. 2 s , it. wi r.., n . m noso annuls do not mention this comet, but they mention comch in tho years 1222 and 1221, nei ther of which, Mr. Hind thought, closely resembled Ilnlley's comet. Tho comparison of nil these old observations is rendered moiv difficult by tho fact that other conspicuous comets appeared about tho same timo as Hnlley's. That experience is in a way re peating itself, for during the present year two notable comets besides Hnlley's havo appeared. The brilliant calculations recent ly made by Messrs. Cowell and Crommelin, of Greenwich, have - shown that Mr. Hind was wrong about tho particularly bright comet of 1202, which was un questionably Hnlley's comet. Moreover, Messrs. Cowell and Crommelin havo carried back tho history of Hnlley's comet to B. C. 240. Every chronicler recorded a wonderful comet in 10GG, tho year of the Norman conquest of England. The representation of it in tho Baycux tapestry is familiar. Tho Chinese annals mention two comets in 837, and if it be assumed that there really were two comets that year and that the copyists have not con fused two accounts of the same rnninr. it. is likolv onmitrh that " . ,. r li i I. any other reason, to the- itisoM to applicant, one of them was Hallcy s. In should mo their atndatttaot patent In this 451 n comet was obseved about the time of the battle in which Attila was defeated by Actius. In the years 295 and 218 comets are mentioned in the annals. The latter was the comet that was seen in Europe shortly be fore the death of the Emperor Opilius Macrinus and was des cribed by Dion Cassius as a very fearful star. Mr. Hind suggest ed that the so-called sword shap ed sign which was seen over Jerusalem in A. D. G5, when Titus began tho war which ended in the destruction of tho city, may have been Hnlley's comet. In the year B. C. 11 there was undoubtedly a remarkable comet which, according to Dion Cassius, seemed to be suspended above Rome before the death of Agrip pa. As the Chinese annals also mention it, Mr. Hind believed that this too was Hnlley's comet. NotallMr. HindVascription," as art critics say, are reconcilable with Messrs. Cowell and Crom melin's latest calculations, but enough is established on all hands to prove that Halley's comet has I been appearing ever since the history of the skies has been written. Spectator.
