In the days gone by it was my privilcgo to companion with a hardy soul all untaught of refine ment and culture. But ho was a truo gentleman. Often in tho cold nights on tho prairie, ho would reach over and tuck tho blankets around mo. But ho would havo used many purple swear wor Js had I said anything about his thoughtfulncss and gentleness. Joo was a truo gen tleman. Ho thought more of a friend than he did of himself. And because Joo thought more of mo than ho did of himself, there is nothing under tho canopy of heaven I would not do for Joo. When tho Uto Indians made their famous pilgrimago in search of a somewhat mythical hunting ground, n gray haired man, wear ing the two stars of a major gen eral in tho United Slates army, was sent out to confer with the chiefs of the runaway tribe. He stopped on his way to tho conference at a little hotel in South Dakota and ato a humble meal with cowpunchers, farmers and tho clerks of tho village store. Coming into the oillco lie met his civilian clerk and together they left tho hotel. The major general, across whose dress coat hangs a row of medals for valor nnd distintruished service, opened the door and stepped back that his Jclork might pass out nrst. The major general's name was Greeley, he of Arctic fame. And then I knew why those medals graced the breast of his dress coat He was a gentleman. With pride I recall how I once walked down the street with a ereat noet. I was abashed in h?s nresoneo. deemimr him al most a companion of the gods And I vaguely wondered why his somrs stirred me and gripped my heart A few steps ahead of us a child slipped and fell on the icy sidewalk. Riley rushed to the little one's side and picked her up and brushed the snow from her skirt, the while he an xiously inquired. "Girlie, did it hurt vou?" Then I knew why I loved Riley's songs. They came from the heart of a gentleman And there was the lad we lift ed from the saddle, gray-faced and with just enough strength left to toll us that the wife of neighbor was sick. He did not even know tho neighbor's name. All he knew was that there was a sick woman and the doctor an hundred miles away. He asked no questions, he did not quibble, he simply rode to the end of the trail and delivered his message. He was a centleman. Thus it would seem that the true gentleman is he who is the the most thoughtful as to the comfort and well being of others Loyalty and gentleness and mod esty and the quiet voice and the kindly way. Watch the little things and you will find the right trail to a man's character. I always supposed Doc Middleton to be one of the hardest propositions the old west ever produced. Doc s specialty was holding up stages and settl ing personal differences with a Colt's forty-five. Doc has a pair of somber, deep-set eyes and a nose like the beak of a hawk. He walks slowly as a man who has often looked into the shining eyes of danger. But one day Doc picked up a stray kitfen and loved and fondled the bedraggled thing. Although Doc has a re cord that reads like a red casual ty, I would fain proclaim him a gentleman. Any man who will pick up a lost kitten and fondle it cannot be all bad.
