HOW TO OUT "LIKED "
There h much needless moan
inff over unpopularity nnd selfish
favoritism among some girls.
Thev blnmo others for their lnck
of success socially when the fault
lies with themselves.
Do you wonder why you arc
not liked as much as other girls
in your set? Look in not out
for tho reason.
Instead of saying: ' 'Of course,
Mary gets invited she lias
money!" or questioning tho good
taste of a hostess in inviting
Isabello, who is plain and poor,
when she might have had you,
ask yeurself: "Why am I not in
vited? Sometimes, if you are honest
in your questioning, tho answer
will be: "There is no reason why
I should bo invited; not everyone
can bo asked every time, and
Mrs. Blank has been kinder to
mo than courtesy demanded."
There is no surer, way to have
a discontented life than to ex-
poet to ring in on every inven
tion that is given. Learn to re
cognize social obligations and
you will cease to hunt slights,
More difficult is it to trace lack
of success to your own failings,
Tho girl who is sweet when it
pleases her and rudely indifferent
at other times; the girl who takes
all and gives nothing, who nc
cepts favors as her due, yet neg
lects the common courtesy of a
call; the girl who abuses hospita
lity by conspicuous flirtations in
corners or by rudeness to other
guests; the girl who can only be
pleasant to men or to those who
she thinks can advocate her in
terests, may each and all be lion
estly surprised that invitations
grow fewer.
To answer truly, no matter
how that answer cuts deep, is
not given to most of us. It is a
trick worth cultivating, especial
ly when the question is the im
portant one, "Why am I not
liked?"
Almost invariably the secret
of being likqd is to be likable.
The girl who is honestly deter
mined to give pleasure not to
be pleased, which is something
quite different rarely falls short
of success.
If wo want to be liked, few of
us arc so unfortunate that we
fail, provided our desire to win
favor is not mere selfish policy
or mean currying of good will.
Often the girl who tries hardest
to be liked because of the bene
fits in store for popularity falls
short, where her less self-seeking
friend who is likable because she
herself likes others, not what
those others may give, wins out.
Don't get soured and pessimis
tic if you think your charms are
unappreciated. Make it your
business to be so agreeable that
liking cannot fail to come your
way. Ex.
Homer Davenport, the car
toonist, is on his way to Oregon
to give a lacture tour. While in
San Francisco Saturday he an
nounced that ho contemplates
publishing a weekly paper in
Portland. No details of this en
terprise were given out, as
Davenport is only considering
tho idea at present. It was in
Portland that Davenports sketch
es first appeared in the pages of
a newspaper.
For tho past week the Sump
ter Valley railroad has been haul
ing their cars to the summit at
Dixie and the mail has been ar
riving hero in the early evening.
It is not thought that this sche
dule will be continued, as the
snow is thawing and the road
bed being new it will be impos
sible to maintain any regular
service. - Blue Mt. Eagle.
