In their discussions Thursday, tho expressions of the Puro Bred Livestock association wore almost unanimous to the effect that tho time has arrived when Oregon stockmen must dovoto attention to tho problem of tuberculosis in cattle. It is impossible to stay, to resist, or to deny tho truth. Tho estimate is that 3 to 10 per cent of tho mortality from tuber culosis in human bcinjrs is from bovine tuberculosis, contracted from cattle. The statement 3 disputed, but the view of tho bureau of animal industry at Washington is strongly on tho sido of the estimate. But without taking this human mortality into nccount, there is another phase of tho loss that must appeal to stockmen. Once the discaso finds a foothold in a herd of cattle, its spread is swift and sure. It is unrecognizable except by the tuberculin test, and its inroads arc as stealthy as a thiof at night The disease spreads from one to another un til presently every unit in tho herd is affected. Tho 10 per cent of diseased animals of today may bo 15 or 20 per cent tomor row, and 30 per cent tho next day. No farmer or stockman can afford to permit this stealthy slaughter of his animals. A reckoning has to come, and the sooner it comes the less tho cost will be. This is tho situation from tho mere financial stand point, without taking account of tho peril to human life. It is a condition oh which cattle owners cannot afford to shut their eyes, for it is a condition attested by the revelations of science and the experience of practiced men. The fact that leading stockmen like the members of the Pure Bred Livestock association are taking up the issue is an excel lent omen. They are leaders in the industry and the average man has abounding confidence in their dictum. It is said that growers, large and small, all over the state are rapidly gravitating toward the view that a move ment for ridding Oregon herds of tuberculosis must soon be be gun. Because newer, Oregon is probably freer than most states from the disease, but that is the exact reason for speeding tho time when a conservative cam paign for remedying the situation should be undertaken. It is one of those matters in which it is always best to be on the safe side. The sentiment voiced by the members of the Pure Bred Livestock association is timely. Portland Journal. In sickness, if a certain hidden nerve goes wrong, then the or gon that this nerve controls will also surely fail. It may be a Stomach nerve, or it may have given strength and support to the Heart or Kidneys, It was Dr. Shoop that first pointed to this vital truth. Dr. Snoop's Restorative was not made to dose the Stomach nor to temporarily stimulate the Heart or Kidneys. The old-fashioned method is all wrong. Dr. Shoop's Restorative goes directly to these failing in side nerves. Tho remarkable success of this prescription dem onstrates the wisdom of treating the actual cause of these failing organs. And it is indeed easy to prove. A simple five or ten days test will surely tell. Try it once, and see! Sold by Reed Bros. For the first time in our natio nal history economics are not regarded as suitable only for the edification of the political econo mist, says E. A. Van Valken- burgh in "Success Magazine." Economics are coming to be re garded as a flesh-and-blood, heart-and-soul personal problem. This is the selfish enlightment which is developing the public opinion which ultimately will Bweep away misgovernment and civic abuses. To those whose mainspring of action is morality, it may not be pleasing to admit that an appeal 10 man's seinsn instincts is nec essary to bring about changes for good. Let these good people re member that however far apart at the beginning two forces may bo that are working for the same end, their lines must con stantly converge. Tho decisive victory must come from public opinion. And majority public opinion must como from a un ion of altruistic ethical con victions and enlightened econom ic selfishness. Tho modern high explosive which alono possesses the force to shatter every fortification of civic misrule will be a combina tion of ethics and economics enlightened selfishness. If you would have a safe yet certain Cough Remedy in tho home, try Dr. Shoop's at least onco. It is thoroughly unliko any other Cough preparation. Its tnsto will bo entirety new to you unless it is already your favor iet Cough Remedy. No. opium' chloroform, or anv other stupefy ing ingredionco nro used. Tho tender leaves of a harmless shrub give to Dr. Shoop's Cough Reme dy its wonderful curativo proper ties. It is truly a most certain and trustworthy proscription. Sold by Reed Bros.
