There were sev eral small threshings. It would be difficult to make an estimate of the amount of bushels per acre, as much of the crop was put up for hay. The potato crop this year was good. The people of Sunset feel much en couraged and see a bright future for the valley. Experience and observation teach them that grains and vegetables can be grown here without water by employing proper methods of farming. It contains about one township, six miles square. The first settlement commenced in the fall of 190(5, but there were few inhabitants until the summer of 1907. During this year, and the year previous, nearly every quarter section was settled upon by homesteaders, who went to work at once building cabins, clearing, plowing and fencing. The first crops were planted in 1907. Only small patches were under cultivation, however, but the results were very satisfactory. During 1908 much progress was made and many more acres were cultivated. Rye, wheat, oats and potatoes being the main crop. The many and good gardens of this year arc worthy of special mention. One of the settlers took first prize at the county fair, held at Burns, for the best dis play of vegetables. During the fall and following spring several fine residences, and a school house that would be a credit to any community, were built. In 1909 manv more acres were placed under cultiva tion, orchards were set by many and improvement of different kinds is continually under wav. This year crops were good in (ioocls, including" full line of cut tflass' S Chinaware. The school house in tho lower Lawen district near the lake was destroyed by (ire some time dur ing last Monday night. Miss Leake, the teacher, went to school but as none of the pupils came on account of the very cold weather, she went home at noon. The next morning the building was a heap of ashes. Those on the scene first found tracks leading to the school house and away again. It is thought some one passed and being cold, entered the builbing and built a fire, possibly not closing the draft when leaving. The home of G. O. Hendricks in the same neighborhood was also destroyed by tire Tuesday. The house and entire contents were lost and it is quite a severe blow to Mr. Hendricks and fam ily, especially at this season of the year. Mrs. Hendricks and the children had gone to Lawen and Mr. Hendricks was out feed ing when he discovered the house was on fire. Ho ran to the building in the hope of at least saving some of the furni ture but when he opened the door the flames metliim, burning his eyelashes and face quite severely.
