INDUSTRIAL NOTES.
(Portland Correspondence).
"Snenks nnd thieves don't ad
vertise", wns tho text of nn im-
miKrntion sermon rccohtly de
livered by n McMinnville minis
tor. Ho followed this up by
showing tho vnluo of intelligent
publicity work in attracting
settlers to tho Pacific Northwest
nnd tho benefits nliko to tho now
comor nnd tho country settled.
Each settlor moans added wcnlth
to tho state and in return tho
Pacific states offer greater op
portunity to tho man from the
older sections of tho country.
Tho Northwest has a duty to
perform, believes tho pastor, in
bringing peoplo from tho over-'
crowded districts of tho cast to
this land of opportunity nnd live
cities in the Northwest are mak
ing tho most of their advantages
in attracting settlers.
Tho Portland Flouring Mills
will maintain its position as tho
chief Hour manufacturing con
cern of the Pacific Northwest
and during tho past week pur
chased tho Hammond Mills and
holdings in Seattle and vicinity
at an approximate cost of $500,
000. The property consists of
the largest flour mill in Seattle
and has a capacity of 2000 bar
rels a day. T. R. Wilcox, head
of tho Portland Flouring Mills,
nnd associats conducted the neg
otiations leading to tho purchase.
He said tho growth of Seattle
has made it advantageous to have
a mill thero and the purchase in
cludes a number of warehouses
in Washington nnd tho agency
of tho Hammond concerns in
San Francisco. The Portland
company now has 14 mills run
ning night and day in different
parts of tho Northwest and is
turning out an enormous product.
State dairymen and fruit grow
ers held their annual conventions
in Portland during the past week
and both wore well attended and
very successful. Both these
great industries will receive a
decided impetus from tho gath
erings of tho past week. Better
acquaintance of the men actively
engaged in dairying and horti
culture has resulted and tho in
terchange of ideas is always val
uable. Thursday night a recep
tion to tho two bodies was given
by the Commercial Club.
