Nowcll formerly director of tho experiment fnrm depart ment of tho Agricultural colleRO of Wyominjr in his paper on "Conservation of Moisture tho Basis of Dry Farming" says: "It may be very well for tho scientist to say that twelve inches of rain fall would be needed, even if all wero actually used by tho plants to produce a certain number of bushels of wheat, but if a farmer actually grows that number of bushels with a less amount of rainfall, the experi ments havo a shadow of doubt cast upon thorn. In all such cal culations, however, it must be remembered that under the sys tem of dry farming here advocat ed, two years' moisture must be conserved for one crop. The conservation of soil mois ture by cultivation has been known in a somewhat vague way for a great many years, but every year that so much vegeta tion is being done as at tho pre sent on dry farming methods, there will be something new on tho farm may bo lost in three ways: 1. By tho snow blowing off the surface or rainfall run ning off 2. By its seeping be low the action of tho crop root and running away as sub-surface water, and 3. by evaporation from tho surface. It is used only in supplying moisture to tho tissues of tlie plants and by transpiration from the leaves. "It is the object of the dry farmer to prevent, as far as pos sible, the three great losses of water so as to leave more for the use of the plant. The running off of water may largely bo pre vented by having occasional banks a foot or more, or raised roads or counter furrows that will keep the water from going down the steepest slope. Tho seepage may be prevented to a great extent by deep plowing and compacting of these soils which do not become firmly corn- found out about the best ways of nr as ervl0"s s n J? olTbla.ck retaining for use of the plant the Ms 01! a h,ot ro -th LcK's' moisture that comes into thc!lature has smco adjourned. soil. A trolly ride over tho either the roller or the subsurface! city, an informal reception and packer is of groat value. This .dinner at the Commercial Club, compact earth, some nine or ten inches deep, when it is properly prepared, form a sort of reser voir that will hold the water from seeping downward. We know that earth which has been stirred and then pressed together will take up more water and held it by capilarity than earth in its natural condition. Most of the efforts of the dry farmer, how over are directed toward prevent ing the third and most serious source of loss, that by evapora tion from the surface. The force of capilarity is hardly understood even by scientists, but it is well known that water will be raised and carried some distance through fine tubes or interstices between the soil grains and that when a crust forms on cultivated land this action takes place very rap idly; that water is brought to the surface about as fast as it will evaporate from the surface, un til there is practically no mois ture left in the ground. Culti vation breaks up this crust, dis integrates the tube-dike inter stices, and forms a soil mulch on the ground which protects the moist earth below from evora tion. Cultivation docs many other things of great value, not only to the dry farmer but to any kind of farmer, but I cannot go very far into a discussion of them." siror !,-. -! nqi;-iuinerr. They all came Jfrom one villiago, and in a great many cas es their sweethearts had preccd ,ed thorn. A prominent society belle of this city was hoard to say that she wished she was a Swede, that they had a lot more fun than she and her friends. Tho ollicers of tho Portlai. 1 Commercial Club are taking time by tho forelock in making tho an nouncement that during tho ses sion of tho Legislature just clos ed that not a single suggestion or request of any Hind or charac ter was put before Oregon law makers by tho Club. Positivo promises are made that Eugene and Portland, tho two cities at the extremes of the Willamette Valley, are to be con nected by trolley just as soon as men and money can do tho work. Someone remarked ten days ago that "Tho people of Oregon thoroughly advertised as at pre sent. Business men of Portland are sending out leaflets which emphasize the statement, "You can buy your ticket to any point 'in Oregon just as cheaply as to Portland." Th nm:n Commercial Club is reorganized and at work. The Elgin Commercial Club gave its first annual banquet last week. A great many of the preachers and school teachers of Oregon are busily at work in an effort to get Eastern people to take advan tage of March and April colonist rates. Appeals from the pulpit and teachers platform arc won derfully helpful, and those in a position to aid in this way who are not doing it are neglecting a duty to Oregon. One hundred and fifty Seattle and Tacoma excursionists were in Portland Saturday, bound .occupied their stay. Others besides multi-millionaires can now eat the fruit of the Oregon hen.
