Optimist gives W. W. Brown ex
tended mention. Wo
the article in full to our readers:
Well I bin over into Harney
county and Grant and have seen
things I never seen before but
hope to soo em again, for it is n
grate big country, a fine large
country and noboddy never dyes i
over there ontil his lime cums,
which as a rule is when lie is
about a hundred and 1 years old.
I have had a line visit, have
met up with lots of peopul, some
of em being folks well known all
over Oregon. For instance there
is the two Bills, Bill Ilanley and
Bill Brown. The second Bill,
Bill Brown, was discovered here
on a sheep range about DO, forty
or sixty years ago. Some peopul
say he has soon all the butes in
the country grow up from little
bits of mounds no bigger than
wash' hilars.
Ennyhow Bill Brown is a old
timer of tho old timers, and ho
now has boss ranches in lots of
places in Harney county, in Crook
county and in Lake county. 1
asked him how menny hoVses he
had and ho sed mebby eight or
10 thpusand, and he has a good
menny hurds of sheep and sum
cows, and o.vtis land enough to
make a big county.
The fokes here call Bill "The
Desert Anjel," because he is one
of the best bosses and best citi
zens they have. All of his men
what work for him live on tho
Pliat of the land. lie byes more
canned goods than enny of the
stores, and tho best he can get.
And he byes bigg. At one ship
ment he sent out 70 sacks of
shugar
Bill is a Presbyterian and ho
is also a anjel to that church and
the skools under it, and when he
takes a day off he sends a check
to some churcn or skool, one of
em for ten thousand dollars go
ing to the Pendleton academy.
Over in Prineville there is ascribed $1000 to meet the pro
church that Bill has helped out , liminary expenses of giving pub
a lot, and helped the minister a ' Hcity to tho proposed work and
lot more, and on the back of one
of the pughs is Brown's naim in
big letters as a sort of a monu
ment to Bill.
Sum fokes call Bill crazy, and
some fokes call him wusser names
and sum call him lucky and some
call him this and some call him
that. But fokes who have had
deels with Bill and have wusted
him wake ud a year or so later
and wonder how it is that Bill,
being so crazy, got the big end
of that bargain.
A phew years ago when bosses
was selling for 2 to five $ a boss,
Bill put all the loose muny .he
cood scrap into bosses. Now he
dells all, the hosses he can gather
each year, five or GOO lied, at 70$
perhoss. So bill was not crazy
on hosses. Then when sheep
got cheap he bought sheep, and
' . f t,:i, !,, of
now when he thinks sheep is at
the top notch he is selling them
ontil from over twenty thousand I
he mebbc only has 10 thousand.
And the yother sheep owners
says Bill is crazy to sell sheep
for they will go higher and high
er. But Bill just winks the
yother eye.
Bill is a old bachelor feller but
it is rhumored that he is looking
for a wife, so it might be well
for widders and others to open
up a correspondence with him.
He is a fine looking old chap,
drosses like a Methodist preech-
