Claimed That Raw Product Can be Ex tracted From Desert Plant. Crude rubber made by a new process is the claim made by the Salida, Colo., Board of Trade, Bv a series of experiments recently made, it has been found that crude rubber can be made from the roots and stalks of the Colorado rubber plant, a growth resembling sage brush in appearance, and said to grow on the desert portions of the West without irrigation or care. When the stems and roots of the plant are ground, a residue of crude rubber, said to excel in quality the finest Para product, remains. The discovery of the strange pro cess was made by a miner in the Colorado mountains, whose supply of water was exhausted and who thought by chewing a root he would moisten his lips, He was surprised to find that a gummy residue like rubber was left in his mouth after chewing the root of the bush now called the Colara.lo rub ber plant. He experimented fur ther, and by the same process ac cumulated a piece of the raw rubber as large as a hen’s egg when he returned to Denver. It is believed that a new indus try has been started by the acci dental discovery of the miner, and articles already manufactured from the plant prove that it is suitable for use as rubber. The plant grows on the dry plateaus of the West and is said to be well adapted to the dry sections of Oregon Lewis and Clark Exposition a ............................ r thrillers 10 show them that though tbs people of Oregon are B|«lly civilised, ihert- i« enough I lltvagerv about the coast country to Jftake the tide a,ld W0()1>’” ™.propriato.
