SUMPTER VALLEY SURVEY
Five Days—Five Races a Day $
Have tleayy Grade« Bal a Superior
Roadbed to That Already Coostruet-
ed--Exact Route Not (ihen.
Chief Engineer West, of the Sum
pter Valley railway, is back to this
city from the Tipton extension to
meetl'resident Eccles for confer
ence, says the Baker City Demo
crat.
Mr. WeBt has been in the field
with his surveying forces for about
two weeks and ie quite enthuiastic
over the result of the work done.
To a reporter Mr. West said:
“Our surveys are rapidly nearing
a conclusion,’’said he, “and from
them I have an idea the route we
will go has been practically' settled.
The road from Tipton on will have
some of the heaviest grades we haye
yet encountered but in these we will
do some heavy cutting, and get
thereby a roadbed superior to any-
that has thus far been constructed
on our line. It becomes evident to
me each day that our road is going
to tap a rich country which, under
the impetus of transportrtion facili
ties, will develope latent resources
to a remarkable degree. The mines
out that way will become the most
consequents! to our smelter in all
the district. No. I am not dispos
ed to make any statement at this
time in regard to the exact route
we will travel toward the head of
the John Day valley. This I may
do after a conference with Mr. Eccl
es, but even then it might not be
wise, as something might occur
during the winter to cause us to
change our plans.’’
Twelve ranchers have organized
an association at Pilot Rock for the
handling of blooded stock exclusi
vely. Animals purchased by the
association will be kept upon the
farms of those belonging to to it
and will be used primarily for
building up the livestock interests
of the members. The intention is
not to enter the business of breed
ing livestock of high character ex
cept for the subscribers, who will
pay equal sums upon all invesinents
or perchnce for the pay inent of loss
es.—East Oregonian.
