It seems strange that our read
ers do not take particular notice of
Mie advertisements which would
give them valuable information re
garding purchases and eave them
money. The Times-Herald has
watched carefully for some time
past the results of ads placed in its
columns and from calculations has
found that the average family can
save from $50 to $75 in a year by
taking advantage of special prices
advertised by two leading mercan
tile firms as they appeared in the
columns of this great religious.
'1'his is not guess work, but that
amount could have actually been
saved from the recular prices of
articles sold. The arrival of new
goods, special sales, reductions on
a certain line of goods, etc., are
all announced for the benefit of
customers and the observing ones
take advantage of these and profit

In the public land farce another
scene is now being enacted which
has created nine new high salaried
offices for the people to bear in
addition to losing the public do
main as rapidly as corporations
can secure titles to it, says the
East Oregonian. The states of
the West have been divided into
nine districts with a special inspec
tor for each district, in addition to
the present force of inspectors and
secret service agents in the land
department. An endless chain of
secret agents now encircles the
land offices, about as follows: An
inspector is located in each land
oilice district to watch the regis
ter; a special inspector is appoint
ed to watch the inspector; a spec
ial examiner is sent around to
check up the special inspector;
a secret service agent follows the
conduct of the special examiner;
a private detective from the inter
ior depaitmeut scrutinizes the acts
of the secret service agent, and
then about once a year the secre
tary of the interior himself travels
around the circuit incognito to
look into the acts of his private
detective. In the meantime the
corporations are waxing fat.
