The date of Ibe next* meeting of
the National Irrigation Association
has been fixed at Ml Faao. Texas on
Tuesday, November 15 to Friday
November 18, official notices of the
meeting have been sent out by the
executive committee
Owing to the great activity in
government irrlgatioa, this meeting
of the association is expected to be
the most important in the history
of tbe organization-.
The association in the past has
had much to do with tbe shaping
of tbe policy of the national irriga
tion law was framed and revised by
oommilleea froai this organization.
Oregon will have the largest dele
gation at El Paso that has ever at
tended a meeting of the association
from this stale, owing to the fact
that Portland is in the lead for the
1905 meeting' Last year Oregon
sent 65 delegates to Ogden to tbe
meeting of the national association
and this year it is fully expected
that 100 delegates will Ko from
this state to El Paso to represent
the stale that is now receiving
the most favorable attention from
the United States government and
also of the 1605 meeting of the us
tional association is wanted as an
attraction for the Lewi« and Clark
fair.
A new railroad, costing about $2,-
000,000 to construct, and tapping
the rich agricultural districts of
Gilliam nod Wheeler Counties,
bringing the interior of those count
ies in touch with an <>i*ening to
Portland and the Pacific, will in a
short time be built, running from
Arlington about 90 inilea in a gen
eral easterly and westerly direction.
Tbe name of the new road is the
Arlington & Pacific Coast Railroad,
and according to a promise made
by its incorporators it will lie in op
eration in time to handle next year’s
grain crop.
One of the termini will be at some
point on the Columbia River, where
easy Access to the sea will lie possi
ble. Just how this will be accom
plished and where that point will
be is a secret as yet, because the
deal has not been put through. It
is expected that everything will be
arranged satisfactorily within a
short time. Work on the road will
be started some time this Summer.
The heaviest grade on It will be 2.1
per cent, and nil of the curves will
be easy.
Coroner Finley, of . Portland, is
one of the officers of the new com
pany, and although very reticent
about the affairs of the corporation
ho denied that it was in any way
connected with any of the com pan -
panies already operating roads in
Oregon or abutting territory. It is
an independent corporation, backed
up by business men of Portland
and other Coast towns anif a small

Drowley reports that all the con
tracts have been Anally classed for
the securing of the money for the
enterprise. He expects Bonta here
¡n a short time and thinks that pus
sibly construction work will begin
in September but not before.
Mr. Drowlby says that while there
is plenty of money in th>- east and
all the banks are full of it, it is very
difficult to gel capital for any enter,
prise. There seems to be a period
of depression on, probably owing to
this being a president»] year, lie
states however that there is a kindly
feeling to Lite west in the matter of
investments. Mr. Drowley adds

that tbe principal portion of the
money will be raised in New York
Philadelphia furnishing the prelim
inary money. He says that if this
enterprise goes through it will be a
big thing for Baker City.
