California is a special envelope on
the back of which are tersely
printed a few facts bearing on
California. These envelopes are
printed for any firm in the state
with the firm’s name in the upper
left-hand corner at cost. So pop
ular have these become that Mr.
Jennings has just placed an order
for a carload for immediate
livery.
SMALLPOX AT DREWSFY.
Dave Miller brought in the news
that a man by the name of H«b
Johnson, a resident of Malheur
county, was afflicted with smallpox
at that place and had been isolated
and placed under quarantine.
County Physician Marsden went
over on Wednesday, placed flags
and notices about the place where
the afllicted man is quarantined
.77 j*''
and looked after his wants. He
1 is
now well cared for and under ■ the pull stock of Harduuure, machinery, CLlagons, Car-
care of a competent nurs^.
The disease was contracted in riacjes, Plouis, Cultivators, Ulindmills and Pumps
Idaho, Mr. Johnson having gone to
Weiser to see his daughter who was on hands at prices to suit the times
reported flying with'smallpox. The
lady recovered and Johnson re-
.urned to the Wm Jones ranch in
Malheur county^where he took down
with it. The people"at the ranch
would not allow him to stay’there,
so he came to Drewsey, riding up
only in calling distance and
seeing A. J. Johnson on the ' street I
told him he had smallpox and ask
ed that he be directed to a place
where he would not expose] anyone
and that a nurse'be sent to care
for him. This was dorfe and no
one has been exposed and therefore
Dr. Marsden does not believe there
will be any spread.
It is strange that the authorities
in Idaho would allow a man who
had been exposec to smallpox to
leave'the state until it was found.he
had not contracted the disease. Mal
heur county has furnished this
county with smallpox patients be
fore also and it appears the health
officers do not pay much attention
to their duties.
Dan Lyons is in taking a vaca

mittee, “Tis like a strange tree in
the forest, the branches of which
have spread and are still growing.”
If you ask a member of the or
ganization, he w ill say, “One for
all, and'Yill for one.” By this he
means a united effort on the part
of eveiv Californian to build up
the state and in return the bless
ings of state growth on those who
have labored for it.
The promotion committee has
been in existance for 21 months.
During that period it has brought
to California over the Southern
Pacific Railroad 2000,000 people
on colonists excursions, it has
made California known in every
state of the Union and in every
civilized country. It has brought
to the Golden State dairy-men
from Holland and placed them
