governor will not have an oppor­
tunity to appoint Mr Chamberlain's
successor, for the reason that there
will l>e no vacancy during Gover­
nor Geer’s term.
There has been some talk around
the citv that District Attorney
Chamberlain intends to resign
his present position, and that Gov­
ernor Geer will appoint his succes­
sor. Inquiry as to this rumor
proved it to be without foundation
in fact, and false in every parti­
cular; Mr Chamberlain will re­
tain his present position to the
time he becomes the chief execu-
t ve of the state, and that he will
then appoint John Manning his

the chief deputy in the district at­
