Montreal Threatened.
Mentrea). Oct. 29.—Montreal is
threatened with a disaster even
worse than that of the Johnstown
flood, owing to the present condi
tion of the reservoirs on Mount
Royal, overlooking the city. The
big basins have been leaking badly
for years, and the leaks have beau
increasing rapidly. The ¡authori
ties of McGill university, which is
situated just below the reservoirs,
haue communicated with the city
officials, pointing out the danger
and notifying the citv that it would
be held responsible for $1,000,000
damage in the event of a break.
The reservoirs hold uver 20,000.-
000 gallons of water and experts
say that unless repairs are made at
once the walls of the reservoirs will
give wav and a terrible disaster re
sult. The masonrv wall is onlv 10
feet thick, and once it is thorough
ly honeycombed and gives way the
earth backing it will not hold the
immense body of water. The effect
would simply be the obliteration of
a wide belt of the city from the res
ervoir to the Lachine canal and
river, and the w hole of the lowlving
part of the city would be flooded.
The mavor has given erdeis to have
th. • necessary repairs made at once. I
