cently made in that locality. This

monly termed the «hell mound or
kitchen midden, now generally ad­
mitted to be the burial ground of
presumably autochthonous Indian
tribes long ago extinct. Mounds
of this description have frequently
been found in parts of t'alitornia'
and along the coast, but in this in-|
stance the discovery is of such a
character mb to suggest to the eye
of an ex[n*rt much greater antiqui­
ty than the average type.
