About that Oscars slap:
How could it happen?
Q. When Will Smith rushed the Oscars stage to
slap Chris Rock, why didn’t anyone stop him?
Where were the security officers? – Ann Levin,
via email
A: Accounts have it that no one expected Smith to do what he
did, and since two people known for comedy were involved,
others could have just seen it as the prelude to something that
might have turned out to be humorous ... which an award-
show producer doesn’t necessarily want to get in the way of.
Of course, as the world is now well aware, things turned out
Chris
much differently once Smith easily reached Rock without any visible interference.

Not that such an incident would occur again, but since all it takes is once in cases
like this, safeguards against it surely will be built into future Oscar shows ... and, very
likely, other award ceremonies as well. Now that last month’s situation has happened,
those are virtually certain to involve much more evident security personnel.
Q: I’m liking “Abbott Elementary” a lot. Will it get a second season? –
Darlene Coffey, Wheeling, W. Va.
A: That’s affirmative. ABC gave the Philadelphia-set school comedy a renewal just a
couple of months into its run, based on positive reviews, response on social media and
– here’s the traditional clincher – promising ratings. Executive producer, creator and star
Quinta Brunson has been acclaimed as one of this television season’s brightest talents, so
it’s not a shock that her efforts will be getting continued exposure via more “Elementary”
episodes.
