SPORTS BRIEFING

Seahawks claim ex-Huskies QB Eason off waivers
from Colts — Jacob Eason returned home once to revive his
football career, deciding to transfer to Washington after leav-
ing Georgia in 2018. Three years later Eason returns home
once more hoping to revive his football career. Only this time,
the decision was made for him as the Seahawks on Wednes-
day claimed him off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts. The
Colts waived Eason the day before after activating rookie Sam
Ehlinger off injured reserve to serve as a third quarterback be-
hind Carson Wentz and Brett Hundley. The Colts had hoped
Eason would clear waivers and return to their practice squad.
Instead, the Seahawks scooped him up and will now let him
compete with Jake Luton as a backup for the moment to Geno
Smith for as long as Russell Wilson is out, which will be at
least two more games based on IR rules.

“I feel like he’s been pretty sharp the last
week and a half.”
Nolan insists he didn’t get too high
during the good times of Hawaii-Ida-
ho-USC, and low when things weren’t
clicking against Washington-WSU.
“Football is an adverse game. Week in,
week out, you’ve got to bring it,” Nolan
said. “You can’t let what happened the
past week affect what’s going to happen
this week.”
It’s not like Nolan is a bust. His perfor-
mances against Hawaii, Idaho and USC
were some of Oregon State’s best quarter-
back play in several years.
“I understand that things aren’t always
going to go your way. But at the same
time, we have a great running game, and a
lot of the things we do can help me get my
passing game more involved,” Nolan said.
“I think we’ve got a lot of juice at our wide

outs. I’m excited to get back to where I
was playing before.”
When Nolan needs a mental pick-
me-up, he turns to his junior college
coach, Mark McElroy.
“He’s like a mentor and a father figure
to me,” Nolan said. “Talking and convers-
ing with him kind of keeps my head level.
That helps me stay on track, for sure.”
Nolan’s first Oregon State start was last
December against Utah. It was a choppy
performance, but Nolan had the Beavers
in a position for a win before coming up
short on a last-minute drive.
“He didn’t play very good in that game,
and he’d be the first to tell you that,” Lind-
gren said. “I feel like he’s come a long way
in just his knowledge.”
Nolan has plenty of motivation to
bounce back. He hasn’t forgot last year’s
game at Utah, or the recent performances.
“I’m excited with my knowledge and
our playbook and having a second chance
to go after the Utah defense,” Nolan said.
“We haven’t earned (a conference title) at Bend High
since joining the conference. They worked really hard for it.
It was exciting to celebrate the last game and celebrate
with them on their senior night.”

“We never as a team made
that a focus,” said Cooper on
the streak of set wins.
“But once we have gone this
far, we thought, ‘Let’s keep it
going.’”
As of Wednesday afternoon,
the Lava Bears were No. 2 in
the OSAA rankings, which
would give them a home-court
advantage throughout the first
two rounds of the playoffs.
Bend is aiming for another
first-time accomplishment.
Since joining the 6A ranks, the
Lava Bears have yet to make
the eight-team state tourna-
ment.
“We are trying to finish up
the league and are excited with
what is ahead,” Cooper said.
“We haven’t hit that last goal
(of making the state tourna-
ment). We really want to do
that this year.”
