The coach is Oregon director
of basketball operations Josh Ja-
mieson. Former Oregon man-
ager Robbie Ellis is the general
manager and current manager
Brian O’Reilly is the assistant
general manager. Oregon as-
sistant Mike Mennenga is also
coaching and was instrumen-
tal in getting the team off the
ground.
“We tried to find a team that
was balanced and we definitely
didn’t want too many players at
each position,” Jamieson said.
“We had a few guys that we
missed on because of profes-
sional commitments or other-
wise, but we’re really happy with
how it came together.”
The team gathered at Mat-
thew Knight Arena Monday for
their first workout.
Leunen, Porter and Taylor
are the only players who never
suited up for Oregon coach
Dana Altman.
All three have had long and
successful professional careers
playing overseas.
For Leunen, that career was
supposed to have ended this
past season as he officially re-
tired and was settling into his
new life back home in Red-
mond with his wife and four
kids. Then he got a call from
Ellis.
“The thought of reconnect-
ing with everybody, connecting
with Dana and his program and
his players, and then Bryce and
Tajuan were playing so I was
like, ‘OK, I’ll get off the couch
and come see what I can do,’”
said Leunen, 35, whose sons
spent Tuesday shagging balls
and shooting 3-pointers before
practice.

Maarty Leunen, a longtime professional basketball player in Italy, is pic-
tured back home in Redmond last year.
Leunen, a 6-foot-9-inch for-
ward, led Redmond High to the
2003 big-school state champi-
onship and took the Panthers
back to the title game in 2004.
At Oregon he played on two
NCAA Tournament teams, in-
cluding that Duck squad that
advanced to the Elite Eight in
2007. He received Pac-10 post-
season honors in his junior and
senior seasons and was drafted
54th overall by the NBA’s Hous-
ton Rockets in 2008, but went
on to a long professional career
overseas, mostly in Italy.
Porter, who also had a long
career playing overseas, said he
also jumped at the chance when
Ellis reached out to him.
“It was a no-brainer,” said
Porter, 33, the Ducks’ re-
cord-holder with 345 career
3-pointers. “Of course I want
to be part of it. Even though
me, Maarty and Bryce is the old

guys, to be back and be involved
is truly fun. It’s gonna be a great
experience.”
Porter, who played in the
first TBT in 2014, has been im-
pressed with how the team has
come together in such a short
amount of time.
“We all know how to play
basketball so it’s an easy adjust-
ment,” he said. “Just have to get
familiar with what guys like to
do. We have everything. We’re
balanced at every position, we’re
athletic, we can all shoot the ball
and we’re all mobile and quick,
so it’s going to be exciting.”
For the nine alums who
played under Altman, the sys-
tem is going to feel very famil-
iar, Benjamin said.
“Oregon style. Fast. We’re
gonna play how we played ev-
ery time, how everyone here
wants to play,” he said. “Get up
and down, get some turnovers,
get some easy baskets, shoot
some 3s, old Oregon style of
basketball.”
Former Oregon players Elgin
Cook and Jamil Wilson are on a
team associated with Marquette
named the Golden Eagles. They
won the TBT title in 2020 and
are the No. 1 seed in the Illinois
regional.
Two teams from each of the
four regionals advance to cham-
pionship weekend in Dayton,
Ohio, July 31-Aug. 3.
“I’ve watched (the tourna-
ment) and have a general idea
what it’s like but I think it’s like
most things, until you’re there
you won’t really know what
it feels like,” Jamieson said.
“Much like the NCAA tourna-
ment, we’re going to travel to
