to a report last year from McK-
insey & Co. Both figures are
higher than the average across
industries, according to the
study. .
The figures are far less en-
couraging at the highest levels.
Only one of the 18 banks in the
S&P 500 Index has a female
chief executive officer.
“When you already have
a workforce that has a lot of
women, there are more op-
portunities for women’s lead-
ership,” said Sarah Kaplan, a
professor at the University of
Toronto and the director of the

“When you look at the
bench strength in all of the
banking world, the next gen-
eration of CEOs will include
a number of outstanding
women,” she said.
After graduating from the
University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill with a degree
in dramatic arts, Duke took a
position as a part-time teller
at First & Merchants National
Bank in her hometown of
Virginia Beach, Virginia —
not because of any interest in
the industry, but because she
needed a job. That started a ca-
reer that would include stints
as CEO, chief operating officer
and chief financial officer at a
variety of firms, as well as time
as a Federal Reserve governor.
But the path she took into
the industry is narrowing as
transactions went increasingly
digital. That’s allowed banks
to cut down branch networks,
further shrinking teller ranks.
In the U.S., the number of
tellers has slid 24% in the 10
years through May, according to
the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
As teller jobs dwindle, and
as those that remain include
higher-value responsibilities,
there’s a risk that banks will
raise the educational require-
ments for those jobs, said Ka-
plan of the University of To-
ronto.

“We’ve had a lot of overripe
fruit due to the heat and short-
age of pickers,” she said.
Some large operations with
more established H-2A visa
worker programs are faring
better.
Teah Smith, entomologist
and ag consultant at Yaki-
ma-based Zirkle Fruit Co., said
Zirkle has a relatively strong la-
bor force this season, with 250
pickers in the orchards.
The crews, she said, have
been working from about
2 a.m. to 11 a.m.
“I think there will be some
damage from heat,” she said.
“But I don’t think we’re too
worried about it because of the
people we have.”
In Oregon, The Dalles re-
gion is also under a triple-digit
heat warning Saturday through
July 4.
“We have never experi-
enced these temperatures
in June before,” said Brenda
Thomas, grower and president
of Orchard View Farms in The
Dalles.
Thomas said she’s prioritiz-
ing worker health and safety,
only picking from 5 a.m. to
10 a.m.
Thomas said she thinks it’s
too early to tell to what extent
the heat will impact the North-
west crop.
“It’s hard to predict,” she
said.
RVs every month, a number
that has not risen with the in-
creased demand. Rinker es-
timates that manufacturing
prices have risen nearly 20%
since the onset of the pan-
demic, partially due to higher
fuel prices and lumber short-
ages.
Retail prices have risen with
increased manufacturing costs.
Weinkauf said that Thun-
der RV prices have risen 10%
in the last year. Prices range
from $25,000 for a basic truck
camper to nearly $100,000 for
high-end fifth wheel RVs.
With no end in sight,
Weinkauf said he is optimistic
that business will continue to
stay busy.
“Well, they’re building them
as fast as they can, and we’re
selling them just as quickly,” he
said. “It’s gonna take some time
to catch up.”
