Start time of Timbers game Saturday pushed back
due to heat — In response to the Portland heat wave that
is hitting this weekend, the Portland Timbers have further
pushed back the start time of their Saturday night match
against Minnesota United FC. Kickoff now is set for 8:30 p.m.
Saturday at Providence Park in Portland. Forecasts call for
high temperatures in the triple digits on Saturday.

‘No-spectator’ games a possibility — A “no-spectator
games” remains an option for the Tokyo Olympics, which
open officially in just four weeks, the president of the Tokyo
Olympic organizing committee said Friday. The admission by
Seiko Hashimoto comes only four days after she announced
on Monday that up to 10,000 local fans would be allowed into
venues — with numbers not to exceed 50% of venue capac-
ity regardless of indoor or outdoor events. “The situation is
changing from time to time so that is why we need to remain
flexible,” Hashimoto said at a news conference. “A no-specta-
tor games is one of our options.”

Day grabs lead at PGA’s Travelers Championship —
After relative unknowns proved successful on the first day
of the Travelers Championship, former major winners surg-
ing to the top as Jason Day, the 2015 PGA Champion, posted
the best round of Day 2 with an 8-under 62 to climb atop
the leaderboard. Bubba Watson, a two-time Masters champ
who won the Travelers in 2010, 2015 and 2018, shot a second
straight 4-under 66 to pull into second at 8-under. Kramer
Hickok co-led the field through 18 holes, and shot a 1-under
69 to move to 8-under, tied for second with Watson.

“I knew it would take about
9:20 to make the team,” Law-
rence said. “I do think I’m ca-
pable of running that time. But
the race was a lot more tactical
than I anticipated. I thought
Coburn would take it out (ear-
lier). I’m happy with how I
raced. I told myself I would say
‘yes.’ That was my motto, and I
just committed to the moves as
best I could.”
Lawrence — who has
trained with Oiselle-sponsored
Littlewing Athletics in Bend
since 2013 and ran collegiately
for Washington — plans to be
a spectator for the last few days
of the trials, which conclude on
Sunday.
Lawrence said she has en-
joyed seeing so many people
from different facets of her life
come to watch her compete in
her second Olympic trials. (She
finished eighth in the stee-

Eugene in 2016.)

Both are winless — a year af-

the Daytona 500 among his
seven victories — and hope to
reverse the trend at Pocono.
They did flip results last year

I’m not really there yet,” Ham-

again, we’ve got a few weeks to
really start looking at that and

up here.’ ”
Harvick finished fifth last
week at Nashville and Hamlin
was 13th — he has one top-10
over his last four starts.

Six weeks ago, Lawrence
said, she figured this would

performance at the trials has
given her even more motiva-

extend her competitive career.
One thing she knows for
sure is that she wants to start
a family with husband Matt
Briggs, who works in finance
in Bend. She said she will stay
involved with the Littlewing
team no matter what, whether
as an athlete or a coach.
“I know someone who is
going to take next year off to
have a baby, and then come
first season driving for Stew-
art-Haas Racing. He hasn’t fin-
ished worse than eighth — with
a championship, a runner-up,
three third-place finishes and
a fifth — over his time at SHR.
But the team has struggled all
season and none of its four Cup
drivers have a win through 17
races. SHR doesn’t have the
speed to challenge Larson or
Hendrick Motorsports.
Harvick said the No. 4 Ford
team is “not to that point”
where it can start winning
weekly.
Hamlin would pass Jeff Gor-
don for most wins at the 2½-
mile track, with two wins for
Joe Gibbs Racing in 2006, and
one each in 2009, 2010, 2019
and 2020.
“I don’t think we can cor-
relate, just because we had suc-
cess last year, it’s going to equal
success this year,” Hamlin said.
“I think we always will have an
advantage when we go (to Po-
cono) simply because of how
my driving style fits that track.”
Larson, meanwhile, has been
the talk of NASCAR as he re-
bounded from a nearly season-
long suspension into the hot-
test driver in the field. Jimmie
Johnson in 2007 was the last to
win four straight Cup races.
Silly season
It’s the time of the NASCAR
season when drivers start the
process of trying to find a job
for next year.
Matt DiBenedetto is again on
the free agent market because
Team Penske announced al-
ready that Xfinity Series cham-
pion Austin Cindric would
move to the Cup Series next
year in the No. 21 Ford with the
Wood Brothers. DiBenedetto
is in his second season driving
the No. 21, a car that has a Pen-
ske affiliation and is easily the
best job of his NASCAR career.
But there could be hope for
DiBenedetto to hang onto that
seat, after all.
back in 2024,” Lawrence said.
“I don’t think I’ll do that, but,
you know, maybe I will. I don’t
know. I have so much respect
for the moms who do both.
That’s not something I’ve ever
wanted for myself, in terms of
doing both at the same time. I’d
like to keep the two separate.”
For now, she feels good
about where she is at.
“I’m racing for me and not
for other people,” Lawrence
said, “which I think is really
important but really hard to
do.”

Brad Keselowski appears
headed to Roush Fenway Rac-
ing for next season, which
would free the No. 2 Ford at
Penske. Keselowski said he’s
months away from being able
to announce his 2022 plans.
But with the No. 2 open,
could Cindric, son of Team
Penske president Tim Cindric,
instead go directly into that
car? Penske was noncommittal.
“The season isn’t even over
yet, so at the moment we hav-
en’t made any permanent deci-
sion on drivers and obviously
there’s a lot of moving parts,”
Penske said.
DiBendetto made the play-
offs for the first time in his ca-
reer and scored a career-best
11 top-10 finishes during his
first season in the No. 21. He’s
19th in the standings now and
lacks the consistency he had a
year ago, but the team earlier
this month replaced crew chief
Greg Erwin with engineer Jon-
athan Hassler.
