Former Blazers broadcaster Kent puts things in perspective
BY JOE FREEMAN
The Oregonian
A couple hours after learn-
ing that he had lost his dream
job, Jordan Kent settled into
the family ride for a daylong
drive to Boise.
He looked in the backseat
at his two young kids, glanced
to the side at his wife, and the
miserable reality of the mo-
ment suddenly evaporated into
an unexpected realization.
“This is all you really need in
life,” Kent said. “Faith, family
and health. It was just a won-
derful reminder of that. When
something like this happens
and you come home and your
son runs up and just wants
a big hug and kiss and is ex-
cited to see you, it just lets you
know: This is all I need.”
It’s been eight days since the
Portland Trail Blazers parted
ways with Kent, who had
worked as a broadcaster for
the organization for five years,
including the last year-plus as
its television play-by-play com-
mentator. He found out in a
mid-week morning meeting,
which he thought would be a
routine annual performance
review, and the news was both

shocking and disheartening.
Kent landed the coveted
play-by-play gig amid less-
than-ideal circumstances, in
the middle of the coronavirus
pandemic and just three weeks
before the Blazers were sched-
uled to resume their season in
the Disney World bubble. But
despite having never called an
NBA game, Kent exceeded ex-
pectations and, after an exten-
sive national search, the team
gave him the high-profile job
permanently three months
later.
He said he “wouldn’t change
a thing” about his performance
or the experience, despite how
things ended. It was a unique
challenge that required Kent
and color analyst Lamar Hurd
to broadcast games remotely
from a studio because of en-
hanced COVID-19 safety
measures, so he didn’t have
the benefit of feeding off a
live crowd and the emotion
of watching in person. But he
deftly adjusted to the condi-
tions and earned praise for his
work, especially considering
his inexperience.
Even as the Blazers told him
they were going in a different

Former Oregon football and basketball player Jordan Kent worked as
a broadcaster for the Portland Trail Blazers for five years, including the
last year-plus as their television play-by-play commentator. The organi-
zation parted ways with him last week.
direction, Kent said, they didn’t
criticize his ability or perfor-
mance, and thanked him for
rising to the occasion at a time
they needed him. In the end,
the team decided to bring back
veteran broadcaster Kevin Ca-
labro, who left abruptly before
the bubble. The sides are nego-
tiating a return and the team
is hopeful the future Hall of
Famer will finish his career in
Portland.
“I have zero regrets about
the job I did and the prepara-
tion I put into the broadcast,”
he said. “I’m very proud of the
of the job I did, especially in
the first year with no fans and
while calling games in a stu-
dio. And I absolutely feel like
I knocked it out of the park
this year. It meant a lot that
they said it wasn’t performance
based. I can walk away with my
head held high.”
Besides, as Kent noted, it’s
not the first time he has had to
go through something like this.
He likens it to his brief play-
ing career in the NFL, during
which he was cut more than
once.
So while he has experienced
a wide range of emotions the
last eight days, he enters the
next phase of his professional
life content with his work and
grateful for the opportunity.
“Obviously, it’s very dis-
appointing,” he said. “To see
things end as soon as they did
without getting a true regular
season to do it is tough. But at
the same time, I understand
there’s a business aspect to
this and no matter how great
or cool a job is, at the end of
the day, it’s just a job. It would
be easy to have all sorts of re-
sentment and anger and frus-
tration. But life’s too short for
that. I had a chance to work for
a first-class organization and it
was a wonderful experience.”
Besides, as one door closes,
others open. Before he took
over Blazers play-by-play du-
ties, he was active in Esports
broadcasting, most notably
with Nintendo. He expects

Also, Kent already has been
approached by multiple net-
works with opportunities to
call college basketball and foot-
ball games starting this fall. He
didn’t want to divulge details,
but odds are high you’ll be see-
ing him soon on your living
room television.
In the meantime, Kent is fo-
cused on last-minute details
surrounding his annual youth
sports camp.
It kicks off its 10th year on
Monday and will make stops
across 23 locations in Oregon
and southwest Washington
over the next seven weeks, wel-
coming 3,200 kids along the
way.
Kent’s time with the Blazers
is over, but his impact in the
area will continue.
“It was an amazing oppor-
tunity and I’m grateful for the
time I got to do it and the re-
lationships I made,” Kent said
of his play-by-play stint. “It has
set me up for the rest of my ca-
reer. I’m still young and I have
a lot of broadcasting left. The
sky’s the limit and I’m looking
at the future with a sense of ex-
citement.”
