A4 The BulleTin • Thursday, June 24, 2021 Antivirus pioneer found dead in Spanish prison BY ARITZ PARRA, RENATA BRITO AND BARRY HATTON Associated Press MADRID — John McA- fee, the creator of McAfee an- tivirus software, was found dead in his jail cell near Bar- celona in an apparent sui- cide Wednesday, hours after a Spanish court approved his ex- tradition to the United States to face tax charges punishable by decades in prison, authori- ties said. The eccentric cryptocur- rency promoter and tax op- ponent whose history of legal troubles spanned from Ten- nessee to Central America to the Caribbean was discovered at the Brians 2 penitentiary in northeastern Spain. Secu- rity personnel tried to revive him, but the jail’s medical team finally certified his death, a statement from the regional Catalan government said. “A judicial delegation has ar- rived to investigate the causes of death,” it said, adding that “everything points to death by suicide.” The statement didn’t identify McAfee by name but said the dead man was a 75-year-old U.S. citizen awaiting extradi- tion to his country. Spain’s National Court on Monday ruled in favor of ex- traditing McAfee, 75, who had argued in a hearing earlier this month that the charges against him by prosecutors in Tennes- see were politically motivated and that he would spend the rest of his life in prison if re- JOHN MCAFEE • 1945-2021 turned to the U.S. The court’s ruling was made public on Wednesday and was open for appeal, with any final ex- tradition order also needing to OBITUARY get approval from the Spanish Cabinet. McAfee was arrested in Oc- tober at Barcelona’s interna- tional airport and had been in jail since then awaiting the outcome of extradition pro- ceedings. The arrest followed charges the same month in Tennessee for evading taxes after failing to report income from promoting cryptocur- rencies while he did consulting work, made speaking engage- ments and sold the rights to his life story for a documentary. The criminal charges carried a prison sentence of up to 30 years. Nishay Sanan, the Chica- go-based attorney defend- ing him on those cases, said by phone that McAfee “will always be remembered as a fighter.” “He tried to love this coun- try but the U.S. government made his existence impossi- ble,” Sanan said. “They tried to erase him, but they failed.” OBITUARY Carl Nordhal Monsen Jr. Reba “Sue” Manion Reba “Sue” Manion passed to be with her Lord and Savior June 18, 2021. Michael Fredrick Stanton November 09, 1967 - June 08, 2021 Aft er a brave batt le with cancer, Michael Fredrick Stanton, age 53, passed away in the loving presence of his family on June 8, 2021, in Bend, Oregon. The youngest of eight siblings, Michael was born on November 9, 1967, in Schenectady, New York. When he was 7 years old and his mother took ill, Michael began cooking and discovered what would become his heart’s passion as a career. At 19, Michael was hospitalized for six weeks with meningococcal meningiti s. Although it can be a fatal virus that claims the lives of many, Michael defi ed the clinical odds and survived. Given a second chance and with the support of his family, Michael recovered. Aft er several years of working in local restaurants in Upstate New York, Michael decided to att end The Culinary Insti tute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park. At the CIA, he further developed his technique by fully embracing a classical approach to cooking. Soon he began working in celebrated French restaurants in New York, including Lespinasse and Les Celebrites. From New York, Michael moved to Los Angeles, where he conti nued to work in French fi ne dining at Encore and La Cachett e. In the West, Michael found love in the kitchen and beyond, where he met his wife, Jessica, and they started their life together in LA. Aft er 10 years of working in LA, including running his own catering company, Michael accepted an Executi ve Chef post in Portland, Oregon, at the Heathman. In Oregon, Michael embraced the joys of cooking with the Northwest bounty and his role as a chef mentor in leading and teaching his team how to create and to celebrate food made with love. With more than three decades of service dedicated to the joys and challenges of cooking, Michael made his home in Bend, Oregon, where he was the Executi ve Chef of Currents at the Riverhouse. Michael was driven to be the best chef and the best person he could be, but ti tles and awards were not important to him. He always cared more about the quality of the food and being able to taste the love that went into it. Michael insti ncti vely chose the paths that were right for him - unapologeti cally. He was determined and exacti ng, with a sharp wit and a deep well of compassion. He was a private man, but when he chose to share, he would tell you the truth. What matt ered most to him were his family and food made with love. During Michael’s last days here with us, he enjoyed the company of his loving family and food made with love, for him - with his loving directi on, of course. Michael leaves behind his wife, Jessica; his siblings (Kathie, Bob, Jean, Judy, Laura, Paula and Patt y) and nieces (Michelle, Stephanie, Morgan, Paige, Lauren and Corrine) and family by marriage; and his furry children, Bella and Biko. In lieu of fl owers, the family suggests memorial contributi ons be sent to Hospice House at Partners In Care in Bend, Oregon in honor of Michael Stanton.
