SPORTS BRIEFING OLYMPICS Medical adviser recommends against fans in venues at Tokyo Games — The safest way to hold the Tokyo Olym- pics is without any fans, the top medical adviser to the Japa- nese government said in a report on Friday. Dr. Shigeru Omi’s recommendation seems to put him at odds with organizers and the International Olympic Committee with the Olym- pics opening in just five weeks on July 23. Fans from abroad were banned several months ago, and organizers are to an- nounce early next week if some local fans should be allowed. Widely circulated reports say the government wants to allow up to 10,000 people at some sports and cultural events. This policy is expected to be applied to the Olympics with smaller ceilings at smaller venues. Seiko Hashimoto, the president of the local organizing committee, said that the final deci- sion on fans was likely to be made Monday in a meeting with organizers, the IOC, the Tokyo metropolitan government, the Japanese government, and the International Paralympic Committee. The course is strong as ever with enough wind, though a marine layer has kept sunshine from baking out some of the greens. Then again, the week- end awaits. The weekend will include Phil Mickelson, whose deft scrambling kept him inside the cut line and he finished with a birdie for a 69. He was seven shots behind in his quest to complete the career Grand Slam. Bland will be a big part of the weekend, and that’s the charm of the U.S. Open. — Kyle Gilbert, Trinity Lutheran boys basketball coach As a team of new faces and expanded roles with little time to work out the details, Trinity Lutheran figures an eight-game state tournament is the best way to find its true potential. “Our hope is to mesh finally after a short season,” Scooty Gilbert said. “We’ll test our lim- its and see how tight of a unit we can get.” e Reporter: 541-383-0307, brathbone@bendbulletin.com “I love that about the game,” defending champion Bryson DeChambeau said after a 69 left him five shots behind. “Anybody, any age group, can play this great game and com- pete and contend. If you’re got the skill set to get the ball in the hole in the least amount of shots, you can be up there with the young guns.” Bland is the classic jour- neyman, happy to be making a living at golf for more than two decades, disappointed to have not won until he broke through last month, not nearly surprised as most everyone else that he was tied for the U.S. Open.
