Ski runs at Mt. Hood
Meadows have long been
used as hiking trails come
summer, but this year the
ski area is really leaning into
its warm weather recreation
with even more options for
hikers.
More than 8 miles of new
trails will open this sum-
mer, Mt. Hood Meadows an-
nounced Tuesday, connecting
the base of the ski area with
existing trails, and adding
new hiking opportunities that
offer a more “intimate” expe-
rience.
Mt. Hood Meadows will
open for its summer season
on June 25 and will operate
Thursdays through Mondays
until Sept. 6.
The new trails begin at the
main Mt. Hood Meadows
parking lot, winding around
the eastern side of the ski area
and up to its highest reaches.
They also connect to existing
trails leading to nearby Um-
brella Falls, Elk Meadows,
Sahalie Falls and the famed
Timberline Trail, which cir-
cumnavigates the mountain.
Mt. Hood Meadows has
also added a new trail in
the Jack’s Woods section of
Heather Canyon and built a
spur trail to a viewpoint at
Picnic Rock.
Dave Tragethon, spokes-
man for Mt. Hood Meadows,
said the new trails may tech-
nically be open before June 25
to those hiking in from out-
side the ski area, though there

ter is a ski run at Mt. Hood Meadows. The Umbrella Falls-Sahalie Falls

may still be work going on,
and several areas are still cov-
ered in snow. He urged hikers
to steer clear of any machin-
ery and ongoing projects.
“We’re blessed with a cor-
nucopia of nature and these
new trails provide a more
personal connection with
the mountain environment,”
Tragethon said in a news re-
lease Tuesday.
“The new trails weave
through meadows of wild-
flowers, in and out of the for-
est canopy and along moun-
tain streams. They provide
a much closer and intimate
walk with nature.”
The new trails also come
with interpretive signs in-
forming visitors about the
local plants and animals, ge-
ology of the mountain and
the area’s importance to the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs, the ski resort said.
Those who don’t want to
hike up the side of the moun-
tain can pay to take a scenic
chairlift ride and soak in the
scenery from a higher van-
tage point.
To access the waterfalls and
meadows around Mt. Hood
Meadows, hikers typically
park their cars at the nearby
Elk Meadows and Sahalie
Falls Trailhead managed by
the U.S. Forest Service, which
is notoriously busy in the
warmer season. The natural
attractions are also accessible
from several other trailheads
in the area.
Parking at Forest Service
trailheads requires a $5 day-
use fee or a valid recreation
pass, while parking at Mt.
Hood Meadows is free be-
tween April 30 and Nov. 1.
LOCAL & STATE BRIEFING
Remains identified of
Klamath Falls man killed
in Pearl Harbor attack
The remains of a Navy ser-
viceman from Klamath Falls
who was killed during the at-
tack on Pearl Harbor have been
recovered and identified, ac-
cording to the Defense POW/
MIA Accounting Agency.
The agency identified the re-
mains of Warren C. Gillette, a
21-year-old Navy Seaman 1st
Class, who served on the bat-
tleship USS Oklahoma at Ford
Island in Pearl Harbor. Gil-
lette was on the ship on Dec. 7,
1941, when Japanese aircraft
attacked Pearl Harbor. The at-
tack on the ship resulted in 429
deaths, including Gillette.
From December 1941 to
June 1944, Navy personnel
recovered the remains of the
crew, which were then interred
in the Halawa and Nuuanu
cemeteries.
In September 1947, mem-
bers of the American Graves
Registration Service trans-
ferred the remains to a labora-
tory on Oahu. The lab was able
to identify 35 crewmembers
from the Oklahoma. The un-
identified remains, including
Gillette’s, were then buried in

plots at the National Memo-
rial Cemetery of the Pacific at
Punchbowl in Honolulu.
In October 1949, a military
board classified the uniden-
tified remains, including Gil-
lette’s, as nonrecoverable.
To identify Gillette’s re-
mains, scientists from the De-
fense POW/MIA Accounting
Agency in 2015 examined the
remains using anthropological
analysis.
In addition, scientists from
the Armed Forces Medical Ex-
aminer System used Y chro-
mosome DNA analysis.
Gillette will be buried on
July 12 in Eagle Point, Oregon.
