SPORTS BRIEFING BASEBALL Wrestling Beavers’ Mulholland a semifinalist for Stopper of the Year — The Oregon State Beavers’ “goofy grandpa” could Continued from A5 also be college baseball’s Stopper of the Year. Jake Mulhol- land, Oregon’s State’s record-setting closer, has been named one of 10 finalists for the Stopper of the Year award, the Na- tional Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced on Wednesday. Mulholland finished the season with a 3.03 ERA and 13 saves. He recorded 25 strikeouts in 32⅔ innings. In five seasons in Corvallis, the left-hander had 43 saves, the most in school history and ninth-most in Division I history. The Stop- per of the Year will be announced on June 19 in Omaha at the College World Series. Beavers pitcher Will Frisch was also honored as one of college baseball’s best freshmen. The right- hander on Wednesday was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Frisch went 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA in 20 games. In 56⅔ innings, he recorded 54 strikeouts. TENNIS Djokovic, Nadal to clash in French Open semis; Gauff, Swiatek fall — Novak Djokovic overcame a 21½-minute de- lay while spectators left because of a COVID-19 curfew and a face-down tumble that drew blood from his left palm to pull out a quarterfinal victory against No. 9 Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5 Wednesday night. Now comes a semifi- nal Friday against Rafael Nadal, who is 105-2 in the clay-court tournament. Nadal’s French Open set streak ended earlier Wednesday, but he had little trouble defeating 10th-seeded Diego Schwartzman 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. On the women’s side, 17th-seeded Maria Sakkari ended No. 8 Iga Swiatek’s 11-match winning streak at Roland Garros by beating her 6-4, 6-4 Wednesday. On Thursday, Sakkari plays unseeded Barbora Krejcikova in the semifinals. Krejcikova advanced Wednesday by eliminating 17-year-old Coco Gauff 7-6 (6), 6-3. BASKETBALL Jazz center Gobert named NBA Defensive Player of the Year — Utah’s Rudy Gobert won his third Defensive Player of the Year award Wednesday after helping the Utah Jazz to the best record in the NBA. Gobert had the most total blocked shots and defensive rebounds in the league this sea- son and became the fourth player to win the award at least three times. Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons was second with 15 first-place votes and 287 votes, while Draymond Green of Golden State was third with 76 points. — Bulletin wire reports POWERBALL The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 19 28 46 50 54 9 Oregon Lottery results As listed at oregonlottery.org and individual lottery websites The estimated jackpot was not available at press time. Meanwhile, La Pine, the 2019 3A state champion, is working to make up for lost time as it approaches the final stretch of the season. After just one practice, a COVID-19 outbreak at La Pine High School sent the school into quarantine after nearly half of the staff and student population tested positive for the virus in late May. That forced La Pine to take a two-week break from all ath- letic activities — no practices and no competitions — during the already shortened season. “That was the hardest part about the two weeks — I wasn’t able to do anything with them,” said La Pine wrestling coach and athletic director Aaron Flack. “But luckily we had good leaders that stepped up and got the team going every day doing workouts. They were sucking some wind tonight, so it definitely hurt to be off for McKinley Continued from A5 “Verone came in as a corner and just worked and grinded in a room that was stacked with a lot of talent. All he did was work and kept pushing and all of a sudden it started clicking and he started making plays and people started notic- ing that and all he did after that was work harder. The respect of him by other players for him is extremely high. He is a leader on this football team.” Starter McKinley had 41 tack- Dean Guernsey/The Bulletin Culver’s Hensley Wachter, right, wrestles La Pine’s Reine Bissember during a dual meet at Culver High School on Tuesday. “Are we in as good of shape? No. Are our fundamentals as good? No. It is what it is. But I wouldn’t trade our team with any team, even the bigger ones, in the state.” — J.D. Alley, Culver wrestling coach two weeks, but it is good to be back.” While the team was on a break, Flack made his wres- tlers promise that they would continue to train even while they could not practice at the school. That led to early morning runs and meeting up at differ- ent houses, led by the senior wrestlers. “I think that made our team a lot stronger and a lot more connected than other teams,” senior Dylan Mann said. “Be- cause we had to go through this together and work to- gether outside of practice.” This weekend La Pine will les with two pass breakups, a forced fumble, recovered fum- ble and interception last sea- son and if he hadn’t missed time due to a targeting penalty, would’ve done even more. His football IQ is invaluable at the position and with new starters coming in at boundary corner and boundary safety, vi- tal to Oregon’s defense. McKin- ley will make the calls in the backfield and cover the most ground. “He’s a coach on the field,” safeties coach Marcel Yates said. “He’s doing a good job with him being here and play- ing so much of not being — it’s easy for a young man like him to say, ‘OK I’ve been here I don’t want to work hard.’ For him he comes out every day and he works hard. He’s learn- ing the defense still but he knows it the best probably out of anybody in the room. That’s always good to have somebody on the sideline helping us out.” Co-backup Greenfield had three tack- les in six games last season, mainly on special teams. Look for him to make a big jump in reps on defense, especially if Happle moves to nickel. Regardless, Greenfield is in a host its regional tournament before competing in the 3A state meet, which will be held in Redmond on June 26. There is a lot to get done between now and then for the team that has just two practices and one meet under its belt this spring. “I’m excited,” Mann said. “Now we are still grinding. We have only wrestled for a week so we need to get that cardio up as much as we can in two weeks to perform at our high- est ability at state.” e Reporter: 541-383-0307, brathbone@bendbulletin.com great long-term spot as Happle departs after 2021 and McKin- ley is draft eligible. Co-backup Happle is likely going to be in the rotation at field safety and nickel. He’s too valuable not to be on the field signifi- cantly — it’s a matter of rota- tions and what the Ducks do at boundary safety. Next wave Daymon David enrolled early and spent most of the spring game on the boundary side of the secondary but was said to be spending time at both.
