Twenty-two Republicans, in a letter released Monday, also called on Nearman to resign. They did so after the disclosure last weekend of video footage, during which he gives out his cellphone number to would-be protesters days before the planned special session and says “someone” might enable them to enter the Capitol from a specific door if a text message is sent. Nearman, 57, is a retired software engineer who lives outside Independence. Mike Nearman, R-Independence, open two doors to the Capitol during a Dec. 21 special legislative session, allowing violent demonstrators who were protesting immediately out- side the door to illegally enter the building. and one count of second-de- gree criminal trespass in con- nection with his opening a door and allowing anti-lock- down protesters to enter the Capitol. Both are misdemeanor charges, maximum penalties for which are one year in jail and a fine of $6,250. Misde- meanor convictions, unlike felonies, do not result in auto- matic expulsion from the Leg- islature. The criminal proceeding is separate from the House’s own disciplinary process. pwong@pamplinmedia.com TALK TO A REPORTER Bend/Deschutes Government Brenna Visser .............................541-633-2160 Business Suzanne Roig ............................541-633-2117 Calendar .....................................541-383-0304 Crook County ..........................541-617-7829 Deschutes County ................541-617-7818 Education ....................................541-617-7854 Fine Arts/Features David Jasper .................................541-383-0349 General Assignment Kyle Spurr ...................................541-617-7820 Health Suzanne Roig ............................541-633-2117 Jefferson County ..................541-617-7829 La Pine ........................................541-383-0367 Public Lands/Environment Michael Kohn ............................541-617-7818 Public Safety Garrett Andrews ......................541-383-0325 Redmond .....................................541-617-7854 Salem/State Government .. 541-617-7829 Sisters .........................................541-383-0367 Sunriver .....................................541-383-0367 REDMOND BUREAU Mailing address ..................P.O. Vikki Breese Iverson of Prineville BY PETER WONG Oregon Capital Bureau State Rep. Brad Witt has been removed from three Or- egon House committees on which he had common mem- bership with state Rep. Vikki Breese Iverson after she filed a complaint about text messages between them. House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, announced the ac- tion Monday after the House Committee on Conduct dead- locked on proposed disci- plinary actions against Witt. The committee, split between two Democrats and two Re- publicans, concluded last week that Witt violated a legislative rule against creating a hostile work environment with the text messages. Under House rules, the speaker has the authority to name, remove and reassign members and leaders of most committees. Witt, 68, is a nine-term Democrat from Clatskanie who represents parts of Clat- sop, Columbia and Washing- ton counties that are within District 31. She was elected to a full term Witt in 2020. She owns a real estate business in Prineville. District 55 covers Crook County, plus parts of Deschutes, Jackson, Klamath and Lake counties. Witt already had yielded his leadership of the House Agri- culture and Natural Resources Committee after Breese Iver- son filed her complaint. Rep. Zach Hudson, a first-term Democrat from Troutdale, now leads the committee. A pedestrian was hit by a ve- hicle and killed Monday night in Bend. She appointed him to the Economic Re- covery and Prosper- ity Committee and the Gen- eral Government Committee; Breese Iverson sits on neither panel. As a practical matter, with the 2021 Legislature scheduled to end its session on June 27, most committees are no lon- ger hearing bills or acting on them. pwong@pamplinmedia.com
