Continued from B1 SPORTS BRIEFING GOLF Spieth hangs on to lead at Colonial — Jordan Spieth knows how to finish out of the rough, and still had the lead af- ter three rounds at Colonial. After hitting his final drive Satur- day into the thick grass on an incline right of the No. 18 fair- way, Spieth recovered with an approach to 8 feet before rolling in the birdie putt that gave him the solo lead again over play- ing partner Jason Kokrak in the final group at the the Charles Schwab Challenge. Spieth had his second consecutive round of 4-under 66 to get to 15 under at Colonial. That was one stroke ahead of Kokrak, who had matched him for the lead with four birdies in a six-hole stretch before a closing par in his round of 66. The resurgent Spieth has the 54-hole lead for a PGA Tour best-matching fourth time this season, all in a span of 11 tour- naments. That stretch includes his win at the Valero Texas Open, the first time he had won since the 2017 British Open. Stricker jumps atop leaderboard at Senior PGA — Steve Stricker took advantage of Mike Weir’s back-nine collapse Saturday to take the lead into the final round of the Senior PGA Championship. Stricker shot a 3-under 67 at Southern Hills for a one-stroke lead over Alex Cejka, who beat Stricker in a playoff this month in the major Regions Tradition in Al- abama. Stricker was at 6-under 204. Cejka shot 68. Weir was 8 under through 11 holes, then made a double bogey on 12, starting a stretch of giving back five shots in five holes. The Canadian left-hander finished with a 74, leaving him three strokes behind Stricker, but still in the final group Sunday. — Bulletin wire reports POWERBALL The numbers drawn Saturday night are: 11 13 22 27 46 20 Oregon Lottery results As listed at oregonlottery.org and individual lottery websites The estimated jackpot was not available at press time. For years, Redmond coach Kris Davis had envisioned hosting a outdoor wres- tling event during the summer. But when the COVD-19 pandemic pushed the sport traditionally played when the tempera- tures are closer to freezing into late spring, wrestling outdoors and under stadium lights became a reality. It became evident after the first of three matches Friday night, that dream of hav- ing an outdoor wrestling event was start- ing to come true for Davis. “With COVID pushing into the spring it kinda manifested itself and so I developed a plan to put this together with my admin- istration and asked for their blessing and it happened,” said Davis. “Some of the best teams reached out and wanted to come out so we are having some really high level wrestling so it is awesome.” Eight teams made their way to the tour- nament. Local teams Mountain View, Bend High, Crook County and Ridgeview made the quick trip, while Cascade, Sweet Home and perennial power Newberg made the trek to Central Oregon. Outdoor wrestling literally was a breath of fresh to the wrestlers, who are known to practice in small, hot and humid rooms and breath- ing in the stale air that forms when wres- tling indoors. “You don’t get as hot,” said Redmond ju- nior 113-pounder Logan Hill. “You feel a lot more free, you have a lot more air and do not breathe in other people’s air.” It should come as no surprise that New- berg, the defending Class 6A state cham- pions, won all of its matches, including a 74-0 sweep of Crook County, a perennial wrestling power itself. Newberg also had a resounding 63-9 win over Mountain View, a third place finisher at the 6A state meet in 2020. Mountain View won its other two matches against Cascade (70-12) and Sweet Home 48-33). Bend High beat Cas- cade (48-24) and Ridgeview (53-24) while losing to Redmond (51-27). Crook County Ryan Brennecke/The Bulletin Redmond High School faces off against Sweet Home High School during an outdoor meet on the Redmond’s football field on Friday night. “With COVID pushing into the spring it kinda manifested itself and so I developed a plan to put this together with my administration and asked for their blessing and it happened. “Some of the best teams reached out and wanted to come out so we are having some really high level wrestling so it is awesome.” — Kris Davis, Redmond wrestling coach would go on to win its final two matches with wins over Cascade (76-3) and Rid- geview (54-24). Redmond would also beat Cascade (59-18) Friday evening. Wrestling outdoors has not been un- common this past school year. Since the pandemic prohibited indoor con- tact sports until late April, teams had to get creative with how to train for a sport where contact is unavoidable. Mountain View practiced in sand vol- leyball courts once outdoor contact sports were allowed, while Crook County ran 400-meter sprints around the track in six inches of snow during the winter. “We have been having to deal with this, we have been wrestling outside the past couple of weeks,” said Crook County ju- nior 132-pounder Tucker Bonner. “We have had to make it work because that is all that we get.” Wrestling outdoors on a warm spring evening leading into Memorial Day was far more enjoyable than wrestling out- doors during the winter. “I like it, the mats are a little soft so that trips you a little bit,” said Bonner. “I like the fresh air though.” Friday was Redmond’s second outdoor wrestling event of the week. The Panthers hosted Pendleton for an outdoor dual meet Wednesday. But hosting eight teams brought its own stress, especially in a week that brought inconsistent weather patterns to Central Oregon. “Any time you are running a tourna- ment you want to make sure everything is running the right way,” said Davis. “But all we wanted was to get the kids back on the mat and compete and that is what we got.” e e Reporter: 541-383-0307, brathbone@bendbulletin.com
