Dear Abby: Seventeen
years ago, when my sister
“Elise” and I were 19 and 25,
our mother kicked us both
out. I have long since for-
given her, and I have a happy
relationship with her. Elise,
on the other hand, has never
let it go. I don’t understand
why, because she’s the older
of us, and 25 was a normal
age to leave the nest.
Elise refuses to see our
mother unless someone
drives out to pick her up,
so every holiday and birth-
day my stepfather picks her
up and drives her round
trip. Even when my sister is
there, she speaks to no one,
not even me. Mom and I
talk and beg her to join us,
while Elise sits off to the side
and refuses to join in. I have
planned girls’ trips for the
three of us with the same re-
sult.
I long for a relationship
with Elise, but not a one-
sided one. I feel bad for Mom
and for her, because I’m sure
Elise is lonely. I feel like a
horrible person when I say
I have a sister but we are not
close. Do you think there’s
any hope?
— Missing Normal in Michigan
Dear Missing Normal:
There may be a lot more
wrong with your sister than a
case of hard feelings. As you
stated, seventeen years ago it
was normal for 25-year-old
women to leave their parents’
home and live independently
or with a contemporary. If, at
age 41, Elise is as isolated and
uncommunicative as you de-
scribe, she may need the help
of a psychotherapist to get
back on track. Of course, this

Stars show the kind of day you’ll have
would entail her admitting
she has a problem and a de-
sire to do something about it.
Unless that happens, there’s
nothing you or your parents
can do to “help” her.
Dear Abby: I am a
63-year-old man, born
“Thomas J. Reilly.” I was le-
gally adopted at 14, although
I had lived with my adoptive
parents since I was 6 months
old and was given their sur-
name, “Johnson.” My wife of
42 years recently passed. My
adoptive parents died several
years ago, and my brother,
who was also adopted by the
Johnsons, has been gone two
years.
My mother always wanted
me to search for my birth
family, but out of respect
for her and Dad, I never
did. Now, because I have no
adoptive relations left in my
life, I’m considering chang-
ing my name back to Reilly,
but I’m ambivalent about
it. I want to reengage with
my birthright, yet remain
respectful to the Johnsons,
who lovingly raised me as
their own. My heart has two
halves, and I don’t know
which to nurture.
— Confused in the East
Dear Confused: The line,
“What’s in a name? A rose by
any other name would smell
as sweet,” is a classic in En-
glish literature. In a situation
like yours, however, it may
not hold true. You honored
your adoptive parents and
your brother every day of
their lives. If you feel chang-
ing your name would make
your heart whole, then fol-
low through with what you
need to do.
Parents must be patient with their

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR SATUR-
DAY, MAY 29, 2021: You are eloquent
kids today, and lovers must be patient with
romantic partners, because everyone is
intense and likely to overreact to things. It’s
also easy to have tunnel vision, which means
you don’t have the full picture. Tonight: Be
helpful.

you a teaching ability should you wish to
use it. You are intelligent and persuasive.
You are also diplomatic and like to get along

many choices. You will have the opportunity
to create the kind of world you want to live in.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Moon Alert today (see above), because you
will have a passionate discussion with a boss,
employer, parent or the police. Don’t initiate
anything important during the Moon Alert.

a female relative (perhaps Mom?), will be
memorable and intense today. Obviously,
you want to get along with family because
family is forever. So your wise move is to be
patient and not overreact. Tonight: Socialize!
Millennials are buying homes
There are more than 72 million millennials in the
U.S., which makes adults born between 1981 and
1996 the largest generation. As they get older, their
priorities turn from renting urban apartments to a
home offering safety and good schooling, said Mat-
thew Gardner, chief economist of Windermere Real
Estate.
In 2020, millennials represented 18%, or more
than 15.2 million, of all owner-occupied house-
holds in the country, even though it’s not easy for
that generation to afford a mortgage and student
loan debt, while saving for a down payment and
paying rent at the same time, said Gardner.
The trend for millennials to buy a home has been
magnified during the coronavirus pandemic by
their ability to work anywhere online, which “has
allowed many to consider moving to more remote
markets where housing may be cheaper,” he said.
Low inventory, which pushes up prices, is due to
the slow pace of new construction and the fact that
existing owners are not moving as frequently as
they once did, said Gardner.
One in five millennials used money given to
them by a family member to help with the down
payment, and one in 10 sold stock to raise the
funds they needed, Gardner said, citing the Na-
tional Association of Realtors’ 2021 Home Buyer &
Seller Report.
Many home shoppers have also saved money
as venues closed during the pandemic by not eat-
ing out, traveling and attending concerts and other
forms of entertainment.
“My advice to millennials, especially given the
rapid pace of home price growth and the lack of
homes for sale, would be to hang in there,” said
Gardner. “And my advice to builders would be to
build for this generation, but don’t forget that they
want a dog shower in their new home.”
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)
Your feelings about everything are
intense today, which is why you are con-
vincing and persuasive about something.
However, you also might just as easily block
someone else’s intentions if you don’t want
to participate. Count to three before you de-
cide something. Tonight: Cocoon at home.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
You might have strong opinions today
about politics, religion or race. You might
debate these issues, write about them, study
them or investigate legalities. Whatever the
case, just coast during the Moon Alert (see
above). Tonight: You are high-viz tonight.

something that you own today, perhaps
a particular possession. You will also have
strong feelings about money and your
wealth, even your self-image. If someone
does anything at all to threaten these areas,
you will react! Tonight: Watch what you say.

Today the Moon is in Capricorn lined
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
Financial matters might trigger strong
emotions in you today, especially if you dis-
cover the truth about something and have
a reaction. If so, don’t act this out or make a
decision during the Moon Alert. (See above)

is over. Tonight: Do something different!

intense emotional experiences in everyone.
It’s important to know that if you do have an
intense reaction to someone or something,
it will be public and everyone will notice.
Tonight: Keep track of your money and
possessions.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
CANCER (June 21-July 22)
A conversation with a partner, spouse
or close friend will be passionate and intense
today. Both parties have strong feelings
about something. Be careful, because it’s
easy to become obsessed, which means log-
ic goes out the window. (See Moon Alert.)
Tonight: Stay calm about money matters.
Today you might be sulking about
something. Or in a completely different vein
(different arm), you might research and dig
deep for answers to get to the truth of some-
thing. If this is the case, you will probably
find what you’re looking for. Tonight: Stay
chill. Not too emotional.

Perhaps you have an idea that you can’t
get out of your mind. Unfortunately, these
strong feelings will overwhelm you and rob
you of your common sense. Tonight: Enjoy
some solitude.

A recent Zillow report found that at least half
of the real estate agents surveyed who represented
a home seller said they were offered an all-cash
deal, an escalation clause in which the potential
buyer would agree to beat a higher offer, a down
payment larger than the standard 20% or a heftier
deposit.
The listings agents also said they received sub-
missions ahead of the offer review date.
Buyers’ agents are also trying to appeal to owners
by letting them rent back their former house un-
til they find a replacement. More unconventional
strategies include throwing a pizza party and send-
ing flowers to the sellers, according to Zillow.

I loved the can do attitude Jeff in the fi nance department
exhibited. He was so helpful in helping us out of our
lease and into purchasing the car. Other dealers tried to
add hidden charges and did not offer any level of service.
Wright Ford has gained a loyal customer and I would give
them my highest recommendation!
