Atlético claims Spain’s La Liga title — When the final
whistle blew, Diego Simeone broke out into a broad smile,
laughed and breathed a sigh of relief. A few moments later,
Luis Suárez was sitting on the field weeping profusely while
on a video call. After a seven-year wait — and a dramatic fi-
nal round — Atlético Madrid had won the Spanish league ti-
tle. Atlético outlasted second-place Real Madrid after coming
from behind to defeat Valladolid 2-1 on Saturday and finish
two points ahead of its city rival after almost losing a lead that
it had held since the ninth round. Suárez, who was let go by
Barcelona against his wishes last season, scored the winner for
Atlético which won its first league title since 2014.
TENNIS
Coco Gauff claims 2nd career singles title in Italy —
American teenager Coco Gauff stormed to her second career
singles title as she comfortably dispatched Wang Qiang 6-1,
6-3 at the Emilia-Romagna Open in her first clay-court final
on Saturday. The 17-year-old Gauff also won the doubles ti-
tle with Caty McNally later Saturday, becoming the young-
est player to complete the singles/doubles sweep in nearly 17
years, since Maria Sharapova won both titles in Birmingham
in 2004. That was just 92 days after Gauff was born. Gauff
and McNally beat Darija Jurak and Andreja Klepac 6-3, 6-2.

Mora’s brace helps Timbers down Galaxy 3-0
BY ANNE M. PETERSON
Associated Press
PORTLAND — Felipe Mora
scored a pair of second-half
goals and the Portland Tim-
bers defeated the LA Galaxy
3-0 on Saturday.
It was the second loss of
the season for the Galaxy,
who were off to a hot start in
the league with four wins in
their first five games. But the
team was playing a man down
against Portland after Derrick
Williams was sent off with a
red card late in the first half.
“We stuck with the plan and
we were very mature in every
moment during the game to
be able to get a very important
result at home that we needed,”
Timbers coach Giovanni Sa-
varese said. “Another three
points. We keep on building.”

Portland Timbers’ Andy Polo (7) flips over LA Galaxy’s Derrick Williams
(3) as LA’s Sacha Kljestan (16) runs alongside them during an MLS match
on Saturday in Portland. Williams received a red card for the foul.
El Paso in the USL Champion-
ship and he has yet to concede
a goal for Portland.
Williams was sent off with a
red card late in the first half af-
ter a dangerous tackle of Port-
land’s Andy Polo, who had to
be helped off the field. That
gave the Timbers a man advan-
tage for the rest of the match.
Polo was seen on the sideline in
the second half with a brace on
his right leg.
“It’s a tackle that’s going
to get a red card every single
time,” Vanney said.Saverese
said it appeared that Polo’s in-
jury was serious: “As of right
now it doesn’t look great,” he
said.
Mora thought the red card
was the turning point in the
match. “After that red card, the
center backs, we started getting
more space in between them.
I was able to move between
them,” he said. “Thankfully I
was able to get two goals today.”
Portland went ahead in the
47th minute on Mora’s header
off a cross from Josecarlos Van
Rankin. Mora added a second
goal in the 60th minute.
“I’m taking my chances
whenever I can get them,”
Mora said after the Timbers
evened their record at 3-3.
