SPORTS BRIEFING SOFTBALL Oregon gains ground in polls after series split with Arizona — Oregon softball gained ground in the polls after splitting a weekend series with Arizona. The Ducks (33-15, 11-10 Pac-12) are No. 11 with 468 points in the NFCA coaches poll and No. 12 with 277 points in the USA Softball poll af- ter taking two of four games against the then-No. 7/10 Wild- cats, who dropped to No. 8/11. That’s up from No. 12 with 460 points and No. 12 with 260 points last week for the Ducks, re- spectively. Oregon wraps up the regular season at Cal (17-16, 3-8 Pac-12) starting Thursday at 3 p.m. Oregon’s Brooke Yanez named NFCA national pitcher of the week — Oregon softball ace Brooke Yanez earned na- tional recognition for her play over last weekend’s series against Arizona. Already named Pac-12 pitcher of the week, Yanez was named NFCA national pitcher of the week on Tuesday. BASEBALL Oregon baseball moves up in polls after sweeping Washington — Oregon baseball moved up in the polls fol- lowing a series sweep of Washington. The Ducks (30-11, 14-7 Pac-12) are No. 9 in the USA Today coaches poll and NC- BWA, No. 10 in d1baseball.com, No. 12 Collegiate Baseball, No. 15 in Baseball America and No. 16 in Perfect Game after beating the last-place Huskies in all three games this weekend. That’s up from Nos. 11-21 last week. Oregon, which is No. 10 in RPI, travels to Utah (12-26, 6-16 Pac-12) for a three-game series starting Friday at 5 p.m. Beavers largely ignored again by most college base- ball polls — The Oregon State Beavers have yet again been ignored by most of the major college baseball polls. The Bea- vers, once ranked in all six major polls, have landed in the top 25 of just one — the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Top 30 — for the second consecutive week. And they dropped one spot, from No. 22 to No. 23, in that poll de- spite winning two of three games against USC last weekend. Oregon State just missed enough votes to earn a top 25 nod in the USA Today Coaches Poll, falling two spots short, but were not mentioned in the D1.baseball.com Top 25, Baseball Amer- ica Top 25, Collegiate Baseball Top 30 and Perfect Game Top 25. But the Beavers (31-15, 13-8 Pac-12) remain in the thick of the race for the regular season conference championship, sit- ting in fourth place with three weeks to go. Oregon State trails first-place Arizona (16-8) by just 1 1/2 games. —Bulletin wire reports MEGA MILLIONS The numbers drawn Tuesday night are: 7 8 20 36 39 22 x 3 Oregon Lottery results The estimated jackpot was not available at press time. OUTDOORS Leigh Perkins, who took Orvis beyond fly fishing, dies at 93 BY WILSON RING Associated Press The man who transformed the Vermont-based Orvis com- pany from a niche fly-fishing supply company into a global retailer of outdoor supplies, ap- parel and protector of the en- vironment has died. Leigh H. Perkins was 93. The Sunderland-based Or- vis company says Perkins died May 7 in Monticello, Florida. The cause of death was not re- leased. An online tribute pub- lished on the company’s web- site said Perkins was a lifelong outdoorsman who hunted or fished more than 250 days a year into his 90s who had a reverence for nature and con- servation. The company says that Per- kins began donating 5% of pre- tax profits to conserving fish and wildlife. While Orvis is based in Sunderland, not far from the headwaters of the Batten Kill — one of the most famous trout streams in the state — the company’s reach goes across the world. “He followed that fly rod to Brian Grossenbacher/Orvis In this undated photo provided by Orvis, Simon Perkins, left, sits with his grandfather Leigh Perkins. all corners of the world and he made connections and re- lationships to both places and people across the globe,” Simon Perkins, Leigh Perkins’ grand- son and the current president of Orvis, said Tuesday. Simon Perkins is the third generation of his family to lead the company. Christopher Saunders, a project coordinator for the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, who describes himself as a passionate fly fish- erman, said the legacy of Leigh Perkins is considerable for both the sport of fly fishing and Ver- mont. Saunders said Vermont was a cradle of the fly fishing indus- try, but over the years the focus of the world moved west. Per- kins made sure fly fishing in Vermont remained prominent. “To this day people still make pilgrimages to go to Or- vis and fly fish on the Batten Kill river and surrounding ar- eas,” Saunders said. “He obviously was commit- ted to more than the bottom line,” Saunders said. “There was a lot of focus on educa- tion.” In 1966, Perkins began what the company describes as the world’s first fly-fishing schools, first in Vermont and then else- where. Saunders said those schools helped introduce thou- sands of anglers to fly fishing. Perkins was born in Cleve- land in 1927, but went to col- lege in western Massachusetts. His mother imbued him with a love of the outdoors and hunt- ing and fishing. Orvis, founded in 1856 by Charles F. Orvis, was a niche business with 20 employees and $500,000 in annual sales when Perkins bought it in 1965. Over the next 27 years, Perkins transformed it into a retail and mail-order business with sales that topped $90 mil- lion. Since then, the company es- timates it’s grown fourfold. Perkins is survived by his wife Anne, four children, a number of stepchildren, grand- children and great-grandchil- dren.
