SPORTS BRIEFING SOCCER Ruidiaz scores fifth goal, Sounders down Timbers 2-1 — Raul Ruidiaz scored his fifth goal in four games and the Seattle Sounders beat the rival Portland Timbers 2-1 on Sunday to re- main undefeated. Ruidiaz scored on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and Fredy Montero added a goal in the 79th to help the Sounders improve to 3-0-1. Stefan Frei stopped a penalty kick before the retake missed. Portland Jeremy Ebobisse drew a foul in the box and Frei deflected Diego Valeri’s attempt, but video review allowed for the retake for encroachment — and Valeri’s second try hit the post. Frei has 1,000 career saves, a milestone only eight other MLS goalkeepers have reached. Portland’s Bill Tuiloma denied Frei the shutout with a goal in stoppage time. It was the 112th meeting between the teams since 1975, when both were part of the North American Soccer League. The Sounders have a 13-10-4 advantage in the MLS era. BASEBALL García homers, drives in 5 as Rangers beat Mariners 10-2 — Adolis García hit his team-leading ninth homer and drove in a career-high five runs, Dane Dunning struck out 10 in five innings and the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mari- ners 10-2 on Sunday. The past seven victories for the Rangers have come after falling behind, this time when they answered Seattle’s two-run fifth for a 2-1 lead with six runs in the bot- tom of the inning. Nick Solak had a tiebreaking, two-run dou- ble as the first six Texas hitters reached base, including Jose Trevino on shortstop J.P. Crawford’s first error in 27 games, and third of the day for the Mariners. GOLF U.S. wins Walker Cup, beating GB&I 14-12 at Seminole — Austin Eckroat and Pierceson Coody got the United States off to a fast start, and Cole Hammer and Stewart Hagestad finished off Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup. Ricky Castillo won again, too, and the Americans took five of the 10 afternoon singles matches and tied another Sunday at Semi- nole Golf Club for a 14-12 victory. The Americans won for the third straight time to take a 38-9-1 lead in the biennial event first played in 1922. Nathaniel Crosby, the son of late crooner Bing Crosby, became the first U.S. captain with back-to-back victories since Buddy Marucci in 2007 and 2009. Home favorite Jutanugarn shoots 63 to win LPGA Thailand — Ariya Jutanugarn shot a 9-under-par 63 in the final round to win the LPGA Thailand by one stroke on Sun- day and become the first home winner of the tournament in 14 years. Jutanugarn’s overall total of 22 under 266 just edged out her fellow Thai Atthaya Thitikul, 18, who missed a four- foot birdie putt at the last to force a playoff. Jutanugarn’s un- blemished round included nine birdies and went some way to making up for her collapse in 2013 when she blew a two-shot lead on the 18th hole with a triple bogey that handed victory to South Korea’s Inbee Park. Alex Cejka wins Regions Tradition playoff over Stricker — With a big comeback and an even bigger putt, Alex Cejka ensured he won’t have to wait or play his way into events for a while. Cejka won the Regions Tradition on Sunday in only his third PGA Tour Champions start, beating defending cham- pion Steve Stricker with a birdie on the first hole of a playoff to earn a full exemption for the next two seasons. A childhood refugee from communist Czechlosovokia (now the Czech Re- public), the 50-year-old Cejka made a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18 and Stricker missed an 8-footer with a chance to extend the playoff at Greystone Golf & Country Club. — Bulletin wire reports Nurkic Continued from A5 “They do have a good chemistry,” Portland coach Terry Stotts said. “A lot of it depends on how the de- fense guards the pick and roll. Whether we need to set a screen and delay the roll or kind of slip out the pick roll early. Dame is obviously very proficient at that pass. I think he and Nurk, going back two, three, four years, they’ve developed that and it’s very effective for us.” The fans certainly re- sponded to Nurkic and Lil- lard doing their thing on Friday and Saturday. Nurkic described how important it is to feel that backing, and he hopes more fans will be allowed to attend postseason games. “When we were having a bad stretch, it was just us,” Nurkic said. “If you’re goI get to turn the corner and try to bring it every night, it was difficult. Now you have somebody who sup- ports you, and our fans are just one of the best, if not the best. They bring it ev- ery time, no matter who we play. … I think the fans bring you on another di- mension.” ON DECK BASEBALL Prep Sports MLB Monday, May 10 Baseball: Gladstone at Madras, 4:30 p.m.; Sisters at Cas- cade, 4:30 p.m. Softball: Sweet home at Sisters, 4:30 p.m. Boys tennis: Redmond at hood River Valley, 3 p.m.; Crook County at Ridgeview, 3 p.m.; Molalla at Sisters, 10 a.m. Girls tennis: hood River Valley at Redmond, 3 p.m.; Ridgeview at Crook County, 3 p.m.; district meet at Ma- dras, 10 a.m. Boys Golf: Bend invitational at Bend Golf Club, 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 11 Baseball: Ridgeview at Mountain View, 4:30 p.m.; Bend at Redmond, 4:30 p.m.; Pendleton at Crook County, 4:30 p.m.; la Pine at Creswell, 4:30 p.m. Softball: Mountain View at Ridgeview, 4:30 p.m.; Red- mond at Bend, 4:30 p.m.; Crook County at Pendleton, 4:30 p.m.; Creswell at la Pine, 4:30 p.m. Boys tennis: Summit at Bend, 4 p.m. Girls tennis: Bend at Summit, 4 p.m. AMERICAN LEAGUE East Division W L Pct GB Boston 22 13 .629 — new york 18 16 .529 3½ Tampa Bay 19 17 .528 3½ Toronto 17 16 .515 4 Baltimore 15 19 .441 6½ Central Division W L Pct GB Chicago 19 13 .594 — Cleveland 18 14 .563 1 Kansas City 16 17 .485 3½ Minnesota 12 20 .375 7 detroit 10 24 .294 10 West Division W L Pct GB oakland 21 15 .583 — houston 18 16 .529 2 Seattle 18 17 .514 2½ Texas 18 18 .500 3 los angeles 15 18 .455 4½ Sunday’s Games Boston 4, Baltimore 3 n.y. yankees 3, Washington 2 Texas 10, Seattle 2 Chicago White Sox 9, Kansas City 3 houston 7, Toronto 4 Tampa Bay 4, oakland 3 l.a. angels 2, l.a. dodgers 1 Minnesota at detroit, ppd. His last victory was the HSBC Champions in Shang- hai on Nov. 3, 2019. His next start is in two weeks at Kiawah Island for the PGA Champi- onship, where he set the record in 2012 with an eight-shot vic- tory. How’s that for timing? “I’m excited going forward now,” McIlroy said. His game is not perfect — he hit only three of 14 fairways in the fi- nal round — but he was quick to say a victory brought vali- dation. Locked in a tight race among Keith Mitchell, Gary Woodland and then Ancer, McIlroy delivered the goods on the back nine. He holed a 10- foot par putt on the par-3 13th. He got up-and-down for birdie with splendid bunker shots on the reachable par-4 14th and the par-5 15th. He won for the 19th time on the PGA Tour, and 27th time worldwide. “This is one of my favorite places in the world,” said McIl- roy, who picked up his first PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow in 2010. “To break the drought and win here, it’s awesome.” It was a tough finish for Mitchell, who started the final round with a two-shot lead and quickly stretched it to three shots with a 6-iron out of a fairway bunker into a stiffening breeze to 12 feet for birdie. But his short game let him down all day, leading to bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes that cost him the lead, and on the 14th hole and 15th holes when he had to settle for pars after being in position for birdies. Mitchell needed to finish alone in second to qualify for the PGA Championship through the money list. But he dropped a shot on the 17th and closed with a 72 to tie for third with Viktor Hovland, who had a 67. “Shows you how awesome he is as a player because he didn’t have his best today and he still won and that’s why he’s got majors and a bunch of wins,” Mitchell said. he had no issues by running out front — often holding a 10-second lead on the field — to win for the second time at the track “Too Tough To Tame.” Truex led 248 of the 293 laps for his 30th career victory in NASCAR’s top series. He’s the only driver with multiple wins over the year’s first 12 races. “It’s fun when you’re out front,” Truex said. “You’re al- ways just mindful on staying focused on what you’re doing.” No one was more focused at Darlington than Truex. He took control midway through the first of three stages, moving in front on a re- start and settling in for a long ride up front. Truex led the final 21 laps to take the first stage, then the last 36 as he col- lected the second stage win by some 14 seconds over his JGR teammate Kyle Busch. Truex broke out when rac- ing resumed for the final stage and easily managed a couple of rounds of green-flag pits stops to stay ahead. Larson was second with Truex’s teammate, Kyle Busch, third. William Byron was fourth and Denny Hamlin, who came in as the NASCAR points’ leader, was fifth. Larson charged hard to catch up, even using a dramatic sliding pass between Ryan Newman and Tyler Reddick to keep chasing the lead. “Glad I didn’t wreck there,” Larson said with a smile.
