BASEBALL MLB SPORTS BRIEFING TENNIS Sabalenka tops Barty to claim Madrid Open women’s title — Aryna Sabalenka defeated top-ranked Ash Barty 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 on Saturday for her 10th WTA title — and first on clay. In the men’s final on Sunday, 2018 champion Alexander Zverev will face eighth-seeded Matteo Berrettini. Sabalen- ka’s victory will move the Belarus player to No. 4 in the world next week. It was the second title for Sabalenka this year after winning the season-opener in Abu Dhabi. In the men’s semi- finals, Alexander Zverev followed his triumph over Rafael Na- dal with a win over Dominic Thiem to reach another Madrid Open final (he won in 2018). He will face Matteo Berrettini, who beat Casper Ruud 6-4, 6-4. FOOTBALL South Dakota St., Sam Houston St. advance to FCS ti- tle game — Jequez Ezzard’s catch-and-run for a touchdown and punt return for a score were among two of three touch- downs Sam Houston State scored in the last 2½ minutes of the third quarter en route to a 38-35 comeback win against James Madison on Saturday in an FCS semifinal. The sec- ond-seeded Bearkats (9-0) advance to the FCS title game to face No. 1-seed South Dakota State (8-1) on May 16 in Frisco, Texas. It’s the Bearkats’ first trip to the title game since losing in 2012 to North Dakota State. In the earlier semifinal, Mark Gronowski passed for two touchdowns and caught a 24-yard TD pass from Pierre Strong Jr. to help top-seeded South Da- kota State beat Delaware 33-3. South Dakota State, in its ninth consecutive FCS playoffs appearance, advanced to the cham- pionship game for the first time in program history. GOLF McIlroy in hunt at Wells Fargo Championship — Golf hasn’t had this much noise, this much energy, since before the COVID-19 pandemic. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that Rory McIlroy is right back in the thick of it at the Wells Fargo Cham- pionship. “It was buzzy, that atmosphere,” McIlroy said after a 3-under 68 left him two shots behind Keith Mitchell. The tour- nament was allowed 30% capacity, whatever that is on a sprawl- ing golf course. Only a small majority of them are wearing masks, making it sound even louder. Mitchell avoided the mis- takes that slowed McIlroy and Gary Woodland, and closed out a bogey-free 66 for a two-shot lead over both of them. — Bulletin wire reports POWERBALL The numbers drawn Saturday night are: 12 17 20 21 26 8 Oregon Lottery results As listed at oregonlottery.org and individual lottery websites The estimated jackpot was not available at press time. Gault Continued from B1 At the Weekend Warrior meet on Sat- urday at Summit, Gault won both the 100 meter (16.11) and the 300 meter hurdle (46.88) events with plenty of room be- tween her and her competition. Even though she won all her races, Fri- day was not quite up to her lofty standards. “I think I can do better though,” she said. “My PR is a 12.45, so I think it could have been a bit better. But overall I’m happy with it.” A three-sport athlete for the Ravens who earlier this spring played soccer and will play basketball once the track season ends, Gault credits playing multiple sports to helping build up her speed. It also helps coming from a family of speedsters. “My parents are super fast. So running is natural for me,” said Gault. “I do other sports that help with my speed. But I’m not as good at those ones as I am at track.” Her coach is hoping that she contin- ues to pursue track, because there is still plenty of room to get faster throughout the course of her high school career. “If she wants to keep getting faster track has to be a priority,” said Conrad. While she excels at the short sprints, Conrad thinks Gault’s greatest potential for success in high school is in the hurdle events. “I have told her that she is a hur- dler,” said Conrad. “There are not a lot of really good hurdlers. And I think she is a really good hurdler because she is so fast, with the speed she has the 300 will be one where she can excel.” Ryan Brennecke/The Bulletin Ridgeview High School’s Kensey Gault passes the baton to her teammate while competing in the 4x100-meter relay at Sisters High School on Friday. “My parents are super fast. So running is natural for me. I do other sports that help with my speed. But I’m not as good at those ones as I am at track.” — Kensey Gault, Ridgeview High School freshman sprinter There is no disagreement between the athlete and coach. While enjoying both events, she enjoys the added challenge that competing in the hurdles presents. “I just started the 300 meter hurdles,” said Gault. “I want to improve on that and break the school record someday. I think I am better at hurdles than the short sprints. “I’m not sure how much faster I can get, but I want to get up and get faster than I am now.” e e Reporter: 541-383-0307, brathbone@bendbulletin.com
