SPORTS BRIEFING BASEBALL Beavers’ Mulholland named to watch list of top relief pitcher award — Oregon State Beavers closer Jake Mulhol- land has been named to watch list for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year award, it was announced Wednesday. The award honors the top re- lief pitcher in college baseball. Mulholland, who earlier this month became the Beavers’ all-time saves leader, has 39 in his career, including nine this season. Mulholland has allowed just two earned runs and 11 hits, while striking out 16, in 18 appearances so far this season. He boasts a 2-1 record with a 0.86 earned run average. Mulholland’s next save will move him into a tie for third place with Oregon’s Jimmie Sherfy on the Pac-12’s all-time list. The winner will be selected on June 19 in Omaha at the College World Series. GOLF OSU women earn NCAA regionals berth — Oregon State had its women’s golf season extended Wednesday when the Beavers earned a berth in the NCAA regionals May 10-12. OSU is headed for Louisiana, where the Beavers are one of 18 teams competing in the Baton Rouge Regional at Louisiana University Club. The NCAA unveiled its 72-team, four-re- gional field Wednesday. The low six teams and three individ- uals not playing for a qualifying team advance to the NCAA Tournament May 21-26 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Oregon State’s lone national appearance came in 1998.. I hope we keep winning.” Johnston and Montagne quickly formed a friendship during their fresh- man year when they realized that they would likely be paired up with one an- other for the remainder of their high school career. Although Montagne is quick to point out that Johnston has the “home-court ad- vantage,” because she has the ping-pong table at her house. Paton might not be done, either. The Broncos own the ninth overall selection Thursday night and have had their eyes on several of the quarterback prospects rated a notch or two below Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and BYU’s Zach Wilson, who are expected to go 1-2 to the Jaguars and Jets, respectively. Pac-12 Continued from A5 Scott’s act left them dramatically behind their peers when it comes to media-rights revenue. It also left the conference with big expenses, bad feelings and no momentum. It wasn’t accidental that the football pro- grams that rose to the top during Scott’s tenure were outliers. Oregon, backed by Phil Knight, for ex- ample. Utah, with its rabid fan base, for exam- ple. Washington with its exceptional donor base, too. Those operations were built to contend in the Scott era not because of the Pac- 12 but in spite of it. Also, consider Mike Leach and WSU had a fun little run of suc- cess amid the downturn. He was the ulti- mate outlier, wasn’t he? But what the con- ference didn’t have was a consistent flow of media rights money that helped it keep from being left out nationally. Also, the conference offices operated as if they were more important than the members them- selves, right down to the San Francisco headquarters that set them back millions. How bad was it? Said one conference employee: “Coaches that visited the conference offices couldn’t even find a parking space.” What the Pac-12 needs is a leader. One who can walk into a room of his/her peers and already have a strong understanding of how the cheese is made. The conference can’t afford a three- to four-year growth curve while the new hire pokes around and figures out how things work. It’s why I’m hopeful one or two of the presidents will pump the brakes today and ask why they haven’t revisited some of the candidates who already removed them- selves. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith says he’s out? Find out what it would take to bring Smith back in. Alabama ath- letic director Greg Byrne says he’s happy on his campus and not interested? Find out if there’s a number that would make Byrne even happier. And has anyone both- ered to call Nebraska AD Bill Moos, who worked at multiple Pac-12 universities? The Pac-12 needs a leader, not an empty suit. I’d feel better if I was sure the Pac-12 Conference understood how vital this hire is to its future. Right now, I’m not sure the presidents and chancellors are grasping it. Also, not sure they have col- lective self-awareness. Not while they’re considering a derivative of Scott mistake. There’s a lot to sell here. There are a lot of great things about the Pac-12, but I need to know the presidents and chancellors learned something from the last decade.
