Olympics FOOTBALL Continued from A7 Trevor Lawrence adding cryptocurrency to his play- book — Trevor Lawrence is set to cash in on multiple plat- forms. Lawrence, the likely No. 1 overall NFL draft pick, signed an endorsement deal with cryptocurrency investment app Blockfolio on Monday. Lawrence, the star quarterback at Clemson, is widely expected be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL draft, which starts on Thursday night in Cleveland. His signing bonus will come in cryptocurrency, which will be deposited into his Blockfolio account in a variety of crypto coins such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Doge. Bitcoin and other digital currencies have increased in value over the past 18 months as a greater number of companies and individ- uals have accepted them as a form of payment. Bitcoin, which was worth less than $10,000 at the start of 2020, tripled in value over 2020 and now is trading at roughly $53,000 a coin. New England Patriots reportedly making calls to trade into the top 10 — The New England Patriots are considering selecting a quarterback in the 2021 NFL draft. The problem for the Patriots is the top five quarterbacks may not be on the board when they’re on the clock at No. 15. The Patriots reportedly are making inquiries in an effort to trade up into the top 10 of the draft, which begins Thursday. The Patriots reportedly have their eye on former Ohio State quar- terback Justin Fields should he begin to slide. Mock drafts have predicted Fields being selected as high as No. 3 to the San Francisco 49ers down to No. 12 to the Philadelphia Ea- gles. New England head coach Bill Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels attended both of Fields’ pro days in recent weeks, adding to speculation of the team’s inter- est. The Patriots reported interested in trading up would go against what the Patriots have done in the recent drafts, which is trade down in the first round. Indeed, another report in- dicates the Patriots are considering trading down to acquire more draft assets. The Patriots have never selected a quarter- back in the first round during the Belichick era. They haven’t selected a quarterback in the first round since selecting Drew Bledsoe in 1993. Resistance to the Olympics in Japan is still running high with 70-80% opposed in recent polls. Fans from abroad have already been barred, and or- ganizers have put off until as late as June a decision on hav- ing any fans at all at Olympic venues. Taro Kono, the minister in charge of vaccination in Japan, suggested earlier this month that empty venues was a prob- able option. IOC President Thomas Bach last week said his plans to meet the torch relay in Hiroshima on May 17-18 are still not con- firmed. Bach’s arrival would be just days after the latest state of emergency ends on May 11. Opposition lawmakers in Japan’s national legislature have suggested Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga scheduled the state of emergency to accom- modate Bach. The government and the In- ternational Olympic Commit- tee have said the precautions are in place specifically for Ja- pan’s “Golden Week” holiday, which begins on Thursday. The torch relay, which began on March 25 in Fukushima in northeastern Japan, has been detoured several times this month and was forced to run in an empty city park in Osaka. It was also rerouted in Mat- suyama City Ehime prefecture. It will be banned altogether this weekend on the Oki- nawa island of Miyakojima. The small island has only one hospital. The relay will run through other locations on Okinawa. The heavily sponsored re- lay is a caravan of more than a dozen cars and other vehi- cles festooned with advertis- ing from major sponsors like Coca-Cola and Toyota. Torch runners — there are 10,000 in total — typically bring up the rear amid blaring music and banter from DJs. The relay is scheduled to end at the National Stadium on July 23 for the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games. Damian Lillard’s struggles Lillard is mired in a horrible slump. For the month of April, he is shooting 38.3% from the field while averaging 22 points per game. On the season, Lillard is at 43.7% and 28.5 points per game. Lillard offered no excuses but he has suffered a long list of injuries this season. Abdo- men strain, knee contusion, hand, hamstring, ankle, etc. “The only thing I could do is look in the mirror at my- self, evaluate myself,” Lillard said. “I’m just not playing well enough. I don’t think it’s worth going into what goes into it or anything like that. I’m on the floor and I’m just not playing well enough. If we’re going to be better, I know that our team’s success is parallel to me being better and I just haven’t played good enough.” Lillard missed three games with a hamstring injury before returning Wednesday against Denver. Earlier in the season when CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic were out with injuries, Lillard had to carry a huge burden. But he said fatigue is not a factor. Showed up and fizzled Robert Covington went 0 of 7 from the field and finished with two points but he did have eight rebounds. Little, Rondae Hollis-Jeffer- son and Derrick Jones Jr. com- bined for 18 minutes off the bench and produced just one point on a free throw from Hollis-Jefferson. and Pro Bowl honors in his rookie season. The Seahawks also selected defensive back Tre Flowers with a fifth-round pick (No. 146) in the same draft. Flowers has started 37 games during his career. Arguably the most impres- sive selection by the Seahawks under Carroll and Schneider has been running back Chris Carson. Carson was a sev- enth-round pick (No. 249), just five picks from being “Mr. Irrel- evant,” the final selection of the 2017 draft. Carson has rushed for at least 1,000 yards during the 2018 and 2019 seasons, the first Seattle player to post to back-to-back seasons of at least 1,000 yards since Marshawn Lynch. Carson agreed to re-sign with the Sea- hawks earlier this month, ink- ing a two-year contract worth up to $14.6 million to stay in Seattle. The contract includes a voidable third year that would push the overall value of the contract up to $24.6 million.
