Les Joslin is seen atop Tumalo Mountain before retiring from the U.S. Forest Service.
Continued from previous page
ing visitor impact on the wilderness. Over
the next 12, he created and implemented
a visitor information education program.
In 2003, he was tapped to lead the team
overseeing wilderness, recreation, heritage,
lands, minerals and roads in the Bend-Fort
Rock Ranger District.
Two years later, he retired from the For-
est Service at 62, but Joslin hardly slowed
down. Over the years, he’s been active with
the High Desert Museum and the Deschutes
Historical Museum and has penned articles
for The Oregon Encyclopedia on such sub-
jects as Camp Abbot and the Paulina Lake
Guard Station.
Joslin’s first book was the memoir “Toiy-
abe Patrol: Five U.S. Forest Summers,” pub-
lished in 1993. Since, he’s written numerous
books of regional interest.
The History Press, publisher of “Three
Sisters Wilderness,” is an imprint of Arcadia
Publishing, which published two of his most
recent books, “Legendary Locals of Bend”
(2016) and “Deschutes National Forest”
(2017). Arcadia also published Joslin’s book
“Images of America: Bend” in 2009, a re-
vised edition of a book originally published
in 2005 by the Deschutes Historical Society.
Interviewed the day after his birthday,
Joslin was philosophical about future books
he might write.
“I’ll have to come up with another idea
that commands my attention. This might
well prove my capstone, I don’t know,” he
said. “I write what I think I know something
about, and what I enjoy, and what I hope
other people will appreciate and want to
know about too.”
